A trip to Albany turned into one of the Hudson Riverโ€™s most famous disasters ๐Ÿšข๐ŸŒŠ

On June 1, 1926, the Hudson River Day Line steamer Washington Irving departed New York City for Albany carrying more than 300 passengers. Just minutes into the voyage, dense fog contributed to a collision with another vessel near Yonkers. The ship quickly began to sink, forcing passengers and crew to abandon ship. Rescue boats rushed to the scene and saved most of those aboard, but three people lost their lives. The sinking of the Washington Irving became one of the most well-known maritime disasters in Hudson River history and remains a remarkable chapter in the story of travel between New York City and Albany.

Albany once had one of the most powerful political machines in America ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ

Erastus Corning 2nd led Albany from 1942 until his death on May 28 1983, becoming one of the longest-serving mayors in American history. During his time in office, Albany transformed through massive projects like the Empire State Plaza while Corning became a fixture in New York politics for generations. He worked alongside powerful political figures like Daniel P. Oโ€™Connell and crossed paths with national leaders including John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.. Corning never lost an election and remained mayor until the very end of his life.
