There’s less than a week to go until we return to Sudeley Castle to investigate the remains of a lost medieval village once located on the same site!

Occupied for 400 years and even recorded in the Domesday Book, this busy settlement mysteriously vanished from history in the 15th century.

Previous digs have uncovered an unusual medieval building, pottery, and even remnants of medieval meals! We’re excited to build on these finds through this season's crowdfunded excavation, mapping the layout of this building, exploring the features that may have surrounded it, and piecing together more of the village's long-lost story.

What kind of medieval settlement existed here before the castle? Who lived here, and how did the arrival of the castle shape their lives? We can't wait to discover more! 🏰

That’s a wrap on our 10th and final crowdfunded dig at Lindisfarne - and what an incredible decade of discovery it’s been!

From the long-lost ruins of the monastery famously raided by Vikings, to the people who lived, worked and worshipped here, our excavations have revealed a story far richer than anyone imagined ⛏️

In this final season, we've uncovered more burials, namestones, and found new evidence of crafts, walls and activity across the site. Each discovery brings us closer to understanding how life on Lindisfarne evolved, and what might have happened in the years that followed 793 AD.

To everyone who’s dug with us, supported from afar and shared in the excitement along the way, THANK YOU! 💚

The fieldwork may be over, but the story isn’t finished! Stay tuned to see how you can be part of Lindisfarne’s next chapter…

Only an archaeologist would go to a state historic park and get excited about fresh faunal remains. I asked the park and they suspect the new litter of foxes are afoot! 🤣

Here is a Great post from Steph the Archaeologist!

I saw this at the Roman Baths in Bath and the label said it’s a curse tablet written in British Celtic but with the Latin alphabet. The British Celts didn’t have a written language but this could be evidence that after the Romans arrived they used the new alphabet to write with. It’s an facinating example of how languages change and adapt and hopefully one day in the future it can be translated!
