VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Meeting with superiors general of women's religious orders, Pope Francis arrived in a wheelchair -- the first time he has used one publicly at the Vatican.
The 85-year-old pope has been experiencing severe knee pain for months and told an Italian newspaper May 3 that his doctor had advised rest and "injections" into the knee; the Vatican has not clarified whether the injections would be cortisone, hyaluronic acid or another therapy typically used to treat joint pain or deterioration.
When the pope met May 5 with members of the women's International Union of Superiors General, he arrived in a wheelchair pushed by his personal aide, Sandro Mariotti.
The women superiors were holding their plenary assembly in Rome May 2-6, focusing on the theme, "Embracing Vulnerability on the Synodal Journey." Pope Francis handed the UISG leaders his prepared text but responded to questions rather than reading the speech.

HIGHLIGHT FROM HOLY WEEK: POLISH BLESSING OF THE BASKETS
A Polish Blessing of the Food Baskets — known as Swieconka — was held at St. Michael’s Church in Cohoes on Holy Saturday, April 16, In Poland, the blessing of the baskets dates to at least the 15th century. The food in the Easter baskets, as well as the Easter Sunday breakfast when the blessed food is eaten, has special significance. There is a special blessing for meats, eggs, cakes and breads. The baskets will most likely include these ingredients:
Bread (chleb) is usually a braided chalka, representing the staff of life given by God; Easter bread (babka) is a round cake of egg yeast dough with raisins that is reminiscent of the risen Lord; butter (maslo) is one of the dairy products included to celebrate the end of Lent and the richness of our salvation. The butter is often shaped into a lamb, which is symbolic of the Paschal Lamb, and is also known as baranek; colored eggs (pisanki), as well as uncolored cooked eggs, indicate hope, new life and Christ rising from his tomb; ham (szynka), as well as other meats, symbolize great joy and abundance in celebration of Christ’s resurrection; sausage links (kielbasa) symbolize the chains of death that were broken when Jesus rose from the dead, as well as God’s generosity; horseradish (chrzan) is a reminder of the bitterness and harshness of the Passion of Jesus. The vinegar it is mixed with symbolizes the sour wine given to Jesus on the cross; salt (sol) is present to add zest to life and preserve us from corruption; and the sweets (slodycze) suggest the promise of eternal life or good things to come. Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger presided at the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany on April 7. 04/07/2022

Since 1983, Child Abuse Prevention Month has been observed annually in April in an effort to raise awareness and prevent child abuse. In 2016, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential proclamation stating: "During National Child Abuse Prevention Month, we recommit to giving every child a chance to succeed and to ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment that is free from abuse and neglect.”

At the Pastoral Center in Albany, Ann Marie Carswell, the associate director for Safe Environment in the Diocese of Albany, said the colorful and striking display - just past the main entrance to the building - that recognizes the month was a combined effort of the Assistance Coordinator’s office, The Hope and Healing Ministry and the Safe Environment Office. The focal point are the blue pinwheels - the national symbol of Child Abuse Prevention - which form a pair of large butterfly wings. The display states “the color blue represents innocence and is the color of awareness and prevention. … A butterfly symbolizes transformation, hope and joy.”

“Our faith teaches us to always protect the life and dignity of the human person,” Carswell said via email. “Child Abuse Awareness/Prevention Month gives us the opportunity to increase awareness, educate ourselves and the community, and to seek healing for those who have been impacted by the horror of abuse. Creating an eye-catching, slightly over-the-top “whimsical” display invites people to stop and take a closer look. Hopefully, by drawing their attention to the fun of the display, a powerful message of the importance of prevention and/or intervention is conveyed.” @albanydiocese @cc_albany @csjalbany @rcdaschools @tom_rcda #childabusepreventionmonth #childabuseawareness

Pope: Blood of Bucha massacre victims 'cries out to heaven'
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis once again pleaded for an end to the bloodshed and violence in Ukraine after images of innocent civilians apparently executed in Bucha sparked outrage and horror around the world. "The recent news of the war in Ukraine, instead of bringing relief and hope, attest to new atrocities, such as the massacre of Bucha," the pope said April 6 before holding up a Ukrainian National flag from Bucharest and concluding his weekly general audience. The world is witnessing "ever-more horrendous acts of cruelty done against civilians, unarmed women and children, whose innocent blood cries out to heaven and implores, 'End this war. Silence the weapons. Stop sowing death and destruction,'" he said. Videos and photographs released April 3, after Russian troops retreated from Bucha and other towns, showed dead bodies in the streets and in the yards of homes. Many appeared to have been shot in the head, ex*****on style, and the hands of many of the corpses were bound. Although Russia dismissed the accusations of war crimes as "fake news," evidence of mass ex*****ons sparked outrage, prompting several countries to expel Russian diplomats from their lands and leading to renewed calls for tougher actions against Russia. - Catholic News Service
