Bishop Mark W. O’Connell, bishop-designate of the Diocese of Albany, has been named chairmen-elect of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Protection of Children and Young People at their annual fall meeting in Baltimore.
Bishop Mark W. O'Connell won over Bishop John P. Dolan of Phoenix, 116 to 106. On Oct. 20, Bishop O'Connell was appointed by Pope Leo XIV to succeed retiring Bishop Edward B. Bishop O'Connell had been an auxiliary bishop of Boston from 2016 until his new appointment.
Bishop O’Connell will serve for one year as the chairman-elect of his committee before starting a three-year term as chairman at the conclusion of the bishops' 2026 fall plenary assembly.

ICYMI: DIOCESAN VOCATIONS FAIR
“Each person is called to a personal vocation which God gives them as a gift and a task. The discovery of this vocation is a moment of great importance for a young person, one which gives meaning to the whole of life.”
— Pope St. John Paul II, Message for the World Day
of Prayer for Vocations, 1996
To support parents, principals and teachers in guiding and forming our young people into the likeness of Christ, the Office of Vocations, in collaboration with the Catholic School Office, held a Diocesan Vocations Fair for students in Grades 4 through 8 on Oct. 21-22 at St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park. All 17 diocesan schools participated along with Academy of the Holy Names, Christian Brothers Academy and La Salle Institute.
Each day began with the celebration of Holy Mass with Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger. Then students explored the diversity of vocations within the Catholic Church. Representatives from the priesthood, consecrated religious life, permanent diaconate, married, consecrated single life and various lay apostolates shared their witness and spoke personally with the students. Students were given time for Eucharistic Adoration, offering them space to reflect and pray about how God may be calling them personally. Each day concluded with a panel discussion and Q&A session, allowing students to ask questions and engage in meaningful dialogue about vocational discernment.
