As we close out this powerful episode and conversation with Tyrell Hughes…

Vell asks: When you look at Albany as a whole, what do you think the city has gotten right? And what opportunities do you see to better serve the next generation?

Tyrell may hate politics, but he loves people. When asked what Albany has gotten right, he pointed to the election of Mayor Dorcey and gave a special shoutout to the "Boss.” 👏🏾

Tyrell believes Mayor Dorcey is the right person to bring Albany’s different cultures and communities together, something he says the city truly needs.

Tyrell also points to a weakness within Albany: its own people do not always support one another. But he believes those weaknesses can become strengths when the community comes together, supports one another, and builds from within.

We purposely took a few days off to let some of the highlights from this conversation marinate. As we close out these last two reels, we want to highlight just how authentic Tyrell is.

Alex openly owned up to buying Tyrell’s book, *Just A Kid From Arbor Hill*, and not reading it yet. He also held himself accountable, while speaking on the importance of supporting Black authors, supporting our culture, and making time to read and stay informed.

Tyrell also shared a story about reading to someone he knew growing up who had a visual impairment. When she eventually purchased his book, she was surprised by his writing and told him, “I didn’t know you wrote like that.” She was so unfamiliar with that side of him that she didn’t even believe he was a writer.

And this was before people were depending on ChatGPT to write for them.

Tyrell’s response? Keep writing. Keep reading. Keep creating. Keep supporting others.

That’s authenticity.

Fatherhood will humble you QUICK.

Vell tried sneaking late night McDonald’s while the kids were asleep. DoorDash rang the bell AND left the receipt. Case closed. Big Back Dad was caught.

Tyrell, who’s colorblind, bought what he thought was a gray car seat. It was PINK. Now the kids want him identifying every color in sight.

Being a dad means providing, protecting, teaching… and accepting that your kids will roast you forever.

Shelle missed Episode 14 because Chris Brown was in town. That immediately had Vell questioning these R&B concerts where Chris Brown and Usher get a little too interactive with the ladies.

Then Tyrell casually dropped: “My wife went.”

No drama. Just trust, good vibes, and apparently a few hilarious rules and regulations beforehand. And yes, his wife made sure he got the FULL play by play afterward.

The red letters represented one of Gabrielle’s lowest moments.

She felt that if her son didn’t make it, neither would she. But after heart surgery and about a week in the hospital, Julien bounced back, eventually helping his team reach sectionals.

Watching him regain his strength during a stress test, Gabrielle saw him get his “wings” back. Meanwhile, she was thinking about actual wings and having a big back moment.

This is where Heart of a Champion becomes a testimony.

Gabrielle kept calling, kept asking questions, and kept pushing for answers about her son Julien. Then came the call no parent wants to receive: “Where is your son right now?” He was playing in a game, and the doctor told her to stop him immediately.

What followed was heart surgery, a difficult medical decision, an induced coma, and a community of family and teammates standing beside Julien through it all.

Sometimes being “too pushy” is exactly what the moment requires. A mother’s persistence helped change the course of her son’s story.

There’s nothing like a story that gives you John Q vibes, and Gabrielle Basile’s real-life journey with her son Julien took us there.

When concerns about Julien’s heart led from an EKG to more testing and unanswered questions, Gabrielle went into full parent mode. Delays, obstacles, uncertainty, none of it was going to stop her from fighting for the medical care her son needed.

That journey helped inspire Heart of a Champion: Julien’s Story, a true story about resilience, perseverance, and what happens when a mother refuses to stop advocating for her child.

Healing doesn’t have a gender.

Gabrielle shares how telling her story became a mission to remind women AND men that they can heal, rebuild, and bounce back.

And somehow, we ended up back at our favorite form of therapy: writing letters. Apparently, if you’ve got problems, Gabrielle wants it in writing.

Sometimes putting it on paper is the first step toward getting it out of your head.
