West Stanly Fire Department

- 3-ALARM FIRE -

(2/21) At 1857hrs West Stanly, Midland, Oakboro and Ridgecrest Fire Departments were dispatched to 7000 Strawberry Ln in reference to a vehicle fire inside a structure. West Stanly Engine 1, Tanker 2, Rescue 1, Tower-Ladder 1, Squad 2 and Car 1 responded. Engine 1 was the first arriving company finding a two-story, wood-frame, single family dwelling that was approximately 50% involved. A working fire was transmitted, and additional water tankers were requested to respond. Engine 1 backed down the driveway while the next arriving company, Midland Engine 1, laid supply line down the driveway to the roadway. Due to water supply and manpower issues, WS Engine 1 initiated fire attack with a 1.75” hose line with the primary goal of containing fire to the structure of origin. By the time a 360 was completed by command, the 2nd floor of the structure was fully involved with fire through the roof. A 2nd Alarm was transmitted adding Georgeville, Fairview, Mt. Pleasant and Albemarle Fire Departments.

A verbal all-clear was given by the homeowner occupant who was in the residence at the time of the fire. Due to the involvement of the fire, crews were forced into a defensive role. A water supply point was established at the closest hydrant, Polk Ford Rd and Renee Ford Rd, approximately 2.5 miles from the incident. Two portable drop tanks were utilized by Midland Engine 1 to supply West Stanly. Once water supply operations were sufficient, additional 2.5” and 1.75" hose lines were utilized to contain the fire and prevent extension to a nearby structure. A 3rd Alarm was eventually requested for additional tankers.

At 2111hrs a control time was transmitted, and mutual departments began to return to service. The approximately 4500 sq ft residence is considered a total loss and a cause investigation is being conducted by the Stanly County Fire Marshal’s Office with assistance from state resources. No injuries have been reported and the homeowner is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The West Stanly Fire Department would like to thank all of our mutual aid departments and support agencies who played pivotal role in this large incident. Our hats off to the dispatchers of Cabarrus, Union, Mecklenburg and especially our own, Stanly, who went above and beyond their normal operations. We had 26 apparatus and over 70 firefighters from 13 departments (3 counties) respond to this incident. We would also like to thank outlying departments who staffed their stations in the event of additional calls within the region. A special thanks to the Matthews Fire Department for supplying a move-up company while our area was spread thin. Chief Crump would like to thank the 15 members of our department for their response and for maintaining a fire watch throughout the entire night.

Any questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Stanly County Fire Marshal’s Office.

As the City continues to restore power, the concern moving forward will be future weather conditions. There has been a good deal of thrawing of ice on trees today to reduce the weight. The hope is that this continues so that if we get further freezing rain it will not add to the weight of what is already there as some of it will have melted. Nonetheless, the men and women of the utilities department will continue to work until power is restored.

Roads are slick as you wake up this morning. We strongly encourage you to stay home and avoid traveling if at all possible. If you must travel, please be sure to go slow, give yourself plenty of extra time, and be mindful of your safety as well as others. The law requires motorists to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of the roadway with its lights flashing. Motorists are required to change lanes away from the emergency vehicle on a multi-lane highway or slow down on a two lane highway and can do so safely. Please use 911 for emergency calls ONLY! The non-emergency phone number is 704-986-3700 should you need assistance. #stanlycountysheriffsoffice #stayin #safetyfirst

The roads in Stanfield and surrounding areas are already becoming difficult to pass. What we are seeing so far is sleet and freezing rain which is making the roads slick. Then followed by rain which briefly melts the ice. This is dangerous because it gives the illusion the roads are safe but it quickly gets slick again when it turns to sleet once more. I had trouble in my all wheel drive SUV this morning on HWY 200. I began sliding several times. PLEASE stay home and off the roads. Be extra cautious as our response times to emergencies may be delayed due to road conditions.
