This photo is not dated, but by the looks of the women's fashions, it is likely from the early 1920s. The car could be from the late teens (any car spotters out there who can help us?). We are looking at the west side of Main Street South. Today, this stretch of property is mostly occupied by the Cornerstone Building which houses EyeWest Vision Clinic on the main level. The buildings shown here, with the exception of the bank on the far right, were owned by Hubert Dick who went by his initials H.W., which was common practice for businessmen of that era. H.W. dabbled in many things. He was a harness maker, which he did in the one-level brick building which many will remember as the cafe. Out of the white buildings left of that he sold various farm implements and farm goods including cream separators, pumps, horse blankets, hay rakes, etc. At one time he also ran a creamery, and he was a local distributor of Gluek's Beer, a line of work in which some of his descendants continued. Around the time of this photo, H.W. Dick was beginning to hand off pieces of the family business to his sons except for the harness making which he continued doing until he passed away in 1934.

Heads up, Monticello! 🚧 Broadway Street will be closed between Meadow Oak Avenue and Hart Boulevard next week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Signs have been posted in the area.

This closure is needed while the contractor works on the bridge over Broadway as part of the I-94 lane expansion.
