UPDATE:
As an update to our earlier message about the 1:00 p.m. dismissal at Albia Junior High and High School, we want to share the latest information from our safety checks.

Current readings show carbon monoxide levels at zero, and carbon dioxide levels are within the expected range. These tests indicate no immediate concerns in the building. We will continue to monitor throughout the weekend and will provide additional updates as needed.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to emergency management staff, first responders, Alliant Energy, and our parents, staff, and students for your flexibility and support as we navigated this situation.

Student and staff safety remains our top priority. If you have questions, please contact the district office.

Sincerely,

Richard Montgomery
Superintendent

We’ve just received word from the Albia Community Schools:

Dear Families and Staff,

Out of an abundance of caution, all Albia Junior High and High School students were dismissed at 1:00 p.m. today after several individuals in the 200 wing of the building reported experiencing headaches.

We are actively investigating the situation to determine the cause. In the meantime, we have removed everyone from the 7-12 building until we can confirm it is safe to return.

Students who need to remain on campus for transportation will be supervised at Lincoln Center until buses arrive.

All other district buildings are operating on their regular schedules, and transportation will run as usual for those schools this afternoon.

We will share an update with families as soon as additional information becomes available. Please know that the health and safety of our students and staff remain our highest priority, and we appreciate your understanding as we take these precautionary steps.

Thank you for your attention to this important update.

Sincerely,

Richard Montgomery
Superintendent

Great turn out last night for Albia's Haunted History Hike. In the pictures, Rob Eells portrays John Hamilton Drake at the former First National Bank entrance. The 'ghost of the blue man' appears on the balcony of the Loeb building and furniture makers Mr Skean and Mr Zook also made coffins - taking one down the Princeton Alley. Just a few of the 8-10 scenes.

From KTVO: SOUTHEAST IOWA RESORT CLOSES ITS DOORS AS SEARCH FOR NEW MANAGEMENT BEGINS

MORAVIA, Iowa — Honey Creek Resort outside Moravia, Iowa has temporarily closed its doors as of Oct. 29, 2025. The move comes as Achieva Enterprises, which managed the resort, ended its business relationship with the Iowa Department of Administrative Services.

The department's director, Mark Campbell, said the state remains committed to the preservation and maintenance of the resort, including proper stewardship of fiscal resources. Department officials said they are "excited for the future of Honey Creek Resort and its continued role in bringing visitors to southeast Iowa."
In the coming weeks, the department will begin the process of procuring a new resort management vendor with plans to reopen the resort for the 2026 season.

As the department searches for a new management, the property will be closed to the public, and reservations previously made from October 30, 2025, into the future will be canceled.

Those who are impacted by the closure are encouraged to contact Achieva Enterprises' Resort Reservation Line at 641-724-1450 to ensure proper cancellation.
Achieva Enterprises took over management of the resort in October 2023.

Before that, the resort was owned by Delaware North, which operated the resort from 2016-2023.

Albia Middle School wins big statewide Award!

Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Education today announced that four Iowa schools have been selected as the state’s inaugural Iowa Blue Ribbon Schools for 2025 during a ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol. Formerly the National Blue Ribbon Schools, the prestigious program is now a state-led recognition initiative, honoring some of the state’s top-performing schools.

Iowa’s inaugural 2025 Blue Ribbons Schools are:
Albia Middle School, Albia Community School District
Bryant Elementary School, Dubuque Community School District
George-Little Rock Elementary, George-Little Rock Community School District
Prairie Hill Elementary School, College Community School District

“Iowa’s inaugural Blue Ribbon School designation recognizes these school communities as models of excellence in Iowa and across the nation, celebrating the accomplishments of students, educators, and families across all corners of the state,” said Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow. “We applaud Iowa’s Blue Ribbon Schools for their leadership to advance evidence-based reading and math instruction, support teachers in doing their best work, and empower students with multiple pathways to postsecondary success. The Department is proud to join Iowans in continuing to honor our exceptional schools that provide all students what they need to meet high expectations and realize their incredible potential.”
The Iowa Department of Education is well positioned to lead this program as a state initiative, having identified, nominated and celebrated more than 200 Iowa schools that have received this honored designation since its inception in 1982.

The U.S. Department of Education (USED) announced in August that it was transitioning the Blue Ribbon Schools recognition program to states, providing the opportunity to celebrate exemplary schools that are achieving their unique educational goals. Previously, the Blue Ribbon Schools program was jointly administered by USED and state departments of education, and the important work of identifying schools for recognition was always done at the state level

In its inaugural year, schools recognized through the Iowa Blue Ribbon Schools program were identified based on the prior National Blue Ribbon Schools requirements. Iowa’s four designees were honored as Exemplary High-Performing Schools, which are measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Each of these schools performed in the top 15 percent of all Iowa public schools based on overall performance on school accountability indicators, including student proficiency and growth.

Eligibility criteria in future years for this highly selective designation will also align with Iowa’s state education priorities built on a foundation of vibrant, safe and healthy learning environments, which include:

- Advancing a strong teacher pipeline through recruitment, development and retention.
- Strengthening early literacy and numeracy through evidence-based reading and math instruction.
- Narrowing and closing achievement gaps through accountability and support.
- Empowering students with multiple pathways to postsecondary success and completion.

Additional information on the Iowa Blue Ribbon Schools program can be found on the Department’s Iowa Blue Ribbon Schools webpage at: https://educate.iowa.gov/pk-12/award-exchange-programs/iowa-blue-ribbon-schools
