Laughter, Purpose & Social Change

After a six-year hiatus, Southwest Funny Fest is back! And this year, it’s bringing more than laughs; it’s bringing purpose.

Comedy can be a powerful tool for social change.

In my latest podcast episode, I spoke with comedian Dana Goldberg, who has raised an incredible $75 million for nonprofits throughout her career. She shared how laughter can be a gateway to self-reflection: when you make someone laugh first, you create an opening for them to consider a new perspective.

That’s exactly what makes this festival so special. From Dana Goldberg to James Tom, Jared Goldstein, and Aaron Foley, these comedians use their platforms not only to entertain, but to make people think. Humor creates a space where important messages can be heard in a way that feels approachable, engaging, and most importantly fun.

When Jill's daughter first said, "Mommy, I'm a girl," Jill's response wasn't driven by fear; it was driven by love. She knew she didn't have all the answers, but she knew she wanted to understand her child and support them in the best way she could.

Her first step was to listen and learn. Soon after, her sister handed her a card for the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico. That simple act of kindness became a lifeline, connecting Jill with compassionate guidance, trusted resources, and a community of families who had walked a similar path.

For many parents, the journey begins with questions. You don't have to navigate them alone. Many states have transgender resource centers that offer confidential support for families seeking to better understand and care for their loved ones.

Research shows that transgender youth who feel accepted and supported by their families experience significantly better mental health outcomes. At the same time, transgender people face disproportionately high rates of suicidal thoughts.

Every conversation, every act of listening to understand can make a meaningful difference in a young person's life.

Here's Our latest Lip Service episode. Our guest Zhenya shared her experience of coming out to her family not just as q***r, but also as polyamorous. She called it a "double whammy," and it highlighted a reality many people face: identity is rarely a single, simple announcement. For Zhenya, this meant navigating her family's reactions to both her sexuality and her relationship structure simultaneously, a journey that was far more complex than she had imagined. Her story is a powerful reminder of the layered nature of our identities and the courage it takes to live authentically. Want to learn more about Zhenya:

Coming out is rarely a single moment; it’s often a journey of self-discovery that unfolds over years and continues for a lifetime.

On the latest episode of Lip Service, I had the privilege of talking with Kat Eaves, whose path to embracing their identity wasn't linear.
Like so many LGBTQ+ people, Kat's journey was shaped by fear, faith, relationships, and the search for a place where they could simply be themselves. It wasn't until they found a warm, affirming q***r community that everything began to make sense. That experience of unconditional acceptance became the foundation for living authentically.

Today, Kat is paying that gift forward as CEO of Give Us the Floor, a nonprofit providing a free, anonymous peer-support app for young people.

What began as a general wellness platform has become a lifeline for LGBTQIA+ youth, with nearly 96% of its users identifying as part of the q***r community. The organization exists because every young person deserves what Kat eventually found: a safe space to be seen, heard, and accepted.

Kat's story is a powerful reminder that when we create communities where people feel they belong, we don't just change lives; we help people discover who they truly are.

Kat also challenged the common belief that simply taking phones away from kids will solve the mental health crisis. They explained that restricting access often pushes young people toward less safe, less moderated spaces online. Instead of blaming youth, Kat believes we should hold technology companies accountable for creating healthier digital environments where connection can happen safely.

Coming out is never just one person's journey; it often becomes a family's journey, too.

When Lance McDaniel shared his truth as a trans man, his mother didn't respond with disappointment. She responded with fear, not of who he was, but for his safety as a Black trans man. Together, his family navigated new names, new pronouns, and a new understanding of one another. Lance even found a gentle way to help his sister adjust, playfully calling her by the wrong name until she experienced firsthand how important it is to be seen and acknowledged for who you truly are.

Seventeen years later, Lance has transformed those lived experiences into a mission of healing. Through his private massage practice, Transcending Massage LLC, he provides a safe, affirming space for trans and gender-diverse clients—where no one has to explain their scars, defend their identity, or justify their healthcare. They can simply breathe, heal, and be themselves.

Lance's story reminds us that acceptance is a journey, healing is essential, and creating safe spaces can change lives.

Listen to his powerful conversation on Lip Service: Our Coming Out Stories and discover how compassion, patience, and understanding can help families and communities grow together.

We don't always know what will come out in a conversation. And Yes, it is part of Unique's Coming Out journey!
We had a fascinating discussion on the podcast about a topic that affects nearly every family: screen time.
My guest, Unique Simmons, who founded the youth advocacy organization "For The People," shared some startling information. Research shows that screen-based addiction is rewiring children's cognitive development, with impacts seen in infants as young as 0-3 months. Her daughter hasn't had a cell phone for 19 months, and in that time has taught herself Japanese and learned multiple instruments.
This isn't about eliminating technology, but about fostering a healthier relationship with it to protect kids' developing brains and social skills.

One of the most complex parts of a coming-out journey can be navigating long-held family beliefs and personal faith. My guest, Doug, talked about growing up in a religious household where certain traditional values were deeply ingrained.

He described a slow process of questioning and eventually moving away from the rigid religious framework of his youth, which he found freeing. When it came to his family, he was understandably hesitant, especially after seeing a hurtful homophobic post from his father online.

However, with the help of his sister as a bridge, his parents moved from initial shock to acceptance. His dad even stands up for him now. It shows that while the initial reaction may be rooted in fear or lack of understanding, love can often pave the way for a profound shift in perspective.
