We are happy to announce the ninth meeting of our 67th program year on Wednesday, April 20 with a presentation by Ted Piccone “How President Obama Changed 50 Years of U.S. Policy toward Cuba”. Ted Piccone is a senior fellow in the Project on International Order and Strategy and Latin America Initiative in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings.

Ambassador Ryan Crocker will be presenting at our November meeting. The program, “Middle East Meltdown: Causes and Consequences for the U.S”, will be Friday, November 20, 2015, 6:00 PM, Canyon Club at Four Hills.

How did things ever get this bad? What is likely to happen next? What should we do about it?

Ambassador Ryan Crocker brings the perspective of a four decade diplomatic career to the topic of U.S. interests and limitations.

He retired from the Foreign Service in 2009 after serving as U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait, and Lebanon. He also served in Iran, Qatar, and Egypt in addition to service in the U.S. After his retirement, he was recalled by President Obama to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan. He holds the personal rank of Career Ambassador and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award in addition to numerous awards from the Department of State, Department of Defense, and the Central Intelligence Agency. In 2009 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the establishment of the Ryan C. Crocker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Expeditionary Diplomacy; and in 2012 Ambassador Crocker was named an Honorary Marine, the 75th civilian so honored since 1775.

Crocker is now Dean and Executive Professor at the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. He has served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia, and the first Kissinger Senior Fellow at Yale University. He is a graduate of Whitman College and the recipient of numerous honorary degrees from U.S. and international universities.

Abdulwahab Alkebsi ,Senior Program Officer at the Center for International Private Enterprise in Washington will be presenting the April program: "The Historical and Political Reasons for Islamic Extremism and the Rise of the Islamic State". The presentation will cover the importance of the year 1979 and four major events that happened that year that have directly led to Islamic extremism. Recent events in Iraq that specifically have led to the rise of the Islamic State will be highlighted. The program will be April 13, 2015, 6:00 PM, at the Tanoan Country Club.

Please join us for a presentation by Dr. Katherine Bliss on “Governing Global Health in an Interconnected World” at 6PM on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Tanoan Country Club. As the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa demonstrates, addressing health challenges in one sub-region can turn into a global endeavor. This talk will provide an overview of several "hot topics" in global health, describe the structures that facilitate international cooperation on health issues, and examine U.S. engagement with such groups as the World Health Organization, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and the Gavi Alliance.
