Ambassador Ryan Crocker will be presenting at our November meeting. The program, “Middle East Meltdown: Causes and Consequences for the U.S”, will be Friday, November 20, 2015, 6:00 PM, Canyon Club at Four Hills.
How did things ever get this bad? What is likely to happen next? What should we do about it?
Ambassador Ryan Crocker brings the perspective of a four decade diplomatic career to the topic of U.S. interests and limitations.
He retired from the Foreign Service in 2009 after serving as U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait, and Lebanon. He also served in Iran, Qatar, and Egypt in addition to service in the U.S. After his retirement, he was recalled by President Obama to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan. He holds the personal rank of Career Ambassador and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award in addition to numerous awards from the Department of State, Department of Defense, and the Central Intelligence Agency. In 2009 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the establishment of the Ryan C. Crocker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Expeditionary Diplomacy; and in 2012 Ambassador Crocker was named an Honorary Marine, the 75th civilian so honored since 1775.
Crocker is now Dean and Executive Professor at the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. He has served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia, and the first Kissinger Senior Fellow at Yale University. He is a graduate of Whitman College and the recipient of numerous honorary degrees from U.S. and international universities.
