This is the truth, I swear to God!
I accelerated on the deserted state road 84 heading toward Fort Sumner. There was a sense of rush as the sun was setting. The goal was to reach Yeso before darkness but we both knew, that would not be possible. We reached Fort Sumner right before sunset, but we knew time was not on our side. Soon darkness would come, sooner than we wanted. My friend pleaded with me, "please hurry!" It was a race we both knew we would not win.
We could see the sun losing its brightness and starting to turn orange. We still had a good 20 minutes. We reached Yeso as the sun disappeared in the horizon. The horizon still had a faint layer of orange at the bottom of edge, but it was fading fast. Darkness would soon fall. We parked in front of the building. And there it stood, staring at us, barely visible from the last light of sunlight, waiting for darkness.
We were nervous and scared at the same time. The unexplained things we experienced a month ago inside this building during daylight hours were still vivid in our minds. This was insanity! The windows revealed nothing, just darkness. We knew the time had come and it was time to enter. We were searching for answers, in a way to find an explanation for something that could not be explained. But somehow, we knew we had to enter, although deep inside we knew is was not right, not logical, not smart. As we made our way to the entrance, the hairs on my back stood up, like some sort of warning. I felt a chilling sensation, a mixture of excitement and fear. Inside it was very dark, we had to use our flashlight to navigate through the clutter of objects and debris. It seems to be ok, we started to relax as we moved around the lower level and upper stairs.
Everything seem to be as we left it the last time we were here. But at the same time, everything looked different at night. Our lights used to see were creating shadows on corners of the rooms and behind large objects. We spent a good 30 minutes exploring every inch of the place. We saw thing we had missed in the daytime.
It was time to leave, there was some sense of urgency. We were glad it was time.
On our way out, while leaving the large open room, I suddenly heard it. This sound suddenly broke the quiet in the darkness. The sound had a short duration but very distinctive. It seemed to come from just outside the open window. I initially became confused with the sound and tried to make sense of it. It sounded as if someone was dragging or scraping something heavy on the dirt shoulder of the road. I stopped and asked, "did you hear that?" She was in front of me and turned around to look at me, "Yes, let’s get out quick." Then we heard it again, the same exact sound, but now it sounded like the direction of the sound had moved.
"It sounds like someone is dragging something right outside!" I said trying to make sense of what both of us were hearing.
There were no vehicles passing by on the road, as the vehicles could be heard from a distance, and the sound lasted longer. This sound lasted for about three seconds and it would stop. To me it sounded like a dragging sound. The sound was loud enough to hear clearly, it appeared that whatever was being dragged must have been large. It sounded like it was happening in the shoulder of the road that is made up of some dirt but mostly of small pebbles.
Then it made the dragging sound again, I was trying to look outside through the window. It seemed like the sound was just outside the window, and it was the same, except the direction was changing. I pointed my flashlight through the window, but a screen made from mesh metal was making it hard to see anything.
My friend was moving fast to the exit door of the building, "we need to leave, we need to get out!" I suddenly became concerned as she was moving too fast away from me, as I had stopped to try to figure out the sound. I was afraid that someone was outside, and she was reaching the door fast.
As I was trying to figure out everything that was unfolding in front of me, the sound was heard again for the fourth time. My friend reached the outside, as I was now running trying to reach her. In my rush, I stumbled on an object, but I was able to regain my balance and avoid falling. When I finally caught up to her right outside the door, I asked her, "who is it?"
"There is no one outside," she responded looking toward the direction of the sound.
She was right, there was no one. The place was deserted. We waited for some time to see if we could hear the sound again, but there was nothing. Just dead silence and darkness. We walked around to the front of the building to see if we could find any drag marks or any evidence of what we had heard. There was nothing.
My friend pled, "please, let's get in the safety of the car, please!" See less
