The Weeping Women of the Past

Did you know that in ancient times, there were women who were actually paid to cry at funerals? These women, known as “mourners” or “professional weepers,” were hired to fill the silence with loud lamentations and visible grief.

Their dramatic tears were a sign of respect and honor for the deceased. The louder they cried, the more it showed how deeply the person would be missed.

It might seem strange to us today, but back then, grief was meant to be heard and seen by everyone.
