Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales was a Mexican-American boxer, poet, political organizer, and activist. He was one of many leaders for the Crusade for Justice in Denver, Colorado.

Corky Gonzales passed away 20 years ago this weekend and was celebrated by his son, Rudy Gonzales this past weekend at Los Jardines Institute. His poem, Yo Soy Joaquin, became a Chicano National Anthem, I dare say a it is a Declaration of Independence then and now. The Chicano Movement was in full force and if you missed it, the poem became the essence of the movement for all oppressed people of color, across the globe. The poem has it’s own life and speaks truth to power. The poem is known by millions of Chicano/as, and Indigenous Peoples over the globe -is a reminder and wake up call for all gente. Escuche!
