Was a lot of fun being the facial mocap provider/sup for this one as part of the mocap capture team then processing/retargeting the facial data for the Bungie Cinematics team

A few weeks ago, Rokoko released the beta version of their new Rokoko Studio application, with a corresponding firmware update for their legacy suits and Smartgloves. (which flew entirely under the radar)

Whatever you might think of the suit itself (I personally like it and find it useful), their smartglove is an entirely different matter. This new beta version and firmware for existing glove hardware really improved the quality and range of the gloves.

Right now, you can only export fbx to something like motionbuilder (where you can pair it easily with body data, and I'll have a tutorial up in a bit on how to do that), as their plugins are all being worked on still, (it is a beta after all). I'm looking forward to seeing what their final full release will look like.

I could push some of the expressions more, but I think I'll leave it here as it is just a test.

Hah! cracked that nut! Livelink from OptiTrack and Rokoko direct into UE. I wanted to separate the hands so that I could use my Rokoko gloves with my OptiTrack system using livelink. Took me a couple of days, but here's the result (showing what I used and how). I'm thinking this could be used with any mocap system

The trick is to use a blend node, so that just the hands from Rokoko are used, plus a few other tidbits (such as the metahuman t-pose from the Rokoko assets) so that the fingers aren't skewed.

P.S. Couldn't resist the title of the background music, "fluffing the duck" by Kevin MacCleod.

This is my (truly!) final render of this personal project, using Dynamixyz Performer and their UE bridge. Raw facial data output from Performer, no UE cleaning. Head movement retargeted in Motionbuilder.

What started out as just a test, evolved into a more in-depth test of a potential workflow.

Even if Dynamixyz has ceased to be a commercial product, it is still in my opinion the best product for facial animation, and as with many in my situation, I have no intention of retooling to something else at the moment, so I will continue to use it for as long as I can.

There were several interesting issues, some caused by the unfinished tool and some others from UE itself. My conclusion? It is a viable tool, although there are a few more hoops to jump through. Established bridges like Maya integrate everything in one place so they are easier. Editing animation in sequencer, using the control board is.. frustrating, crashes, weird rendering bugs almost made me give up.. and you definitely want to use the highest framerate possible to track and retarget, 25 and 50fps are just not quite enough.

Final version of my metahuman facial animation test with the Dynamixyz beta UE Bridge. All done in UE without using Maya or any other software. A real learning experience since there are tools not present in this bridge that are really helpful to nail performances, so this used all the tricks I know within Performer. Not perfect, but as far as I'm going to take this one.

Managed to clean up most of the twitches in the Performer track, looks a lot better, now to figure out the wet texture of the skin in UE

WIP render of another test of Metahumans with the Dynamixyz Beta UE Bridge. This time I took a short clip from Blade Runner and brought this into UE. Since the beta bridge can't use the actual bones (and sadly, now never will), I had to retarget just the head into Motionbuilder then bring that in. There are a lot of minute twitches, caused by the rain in the actual footage, and I need to figure out how to make his skin wet.

My final test of the beta UE bridge with Metahumans, corrected most of the issues although there's still more that I could do, but will leave it here for now. Next tests will be integrating this with body mocap and fingers.. stay tuned!

Having fun with facial calisthenics, wanted to see if I could accurately capture puff cheek blow.. at 60fps then slowed down
