55th Elite 8 Volleyball Championships start Tuesday in Birmingham CrossPlex
McGill-Toolen chases fourth straight AHSAA
State Title as Five other Teams strive to Repeat

MONTGOMERY – McGill-Toolen Catholic High School won last week’s Class 7A South Super Regional, pushing the Dirty Dozen’s current win streak to 38 in a row.
McGill, led by coach Kate Wood, will put another streak on the line at the AHSAA 55th Elite 8 Volleyball Championships this week in at the Birmingham CrossPlex. McGill has won the last three Class 7A championships.
A total of 56 teams – eight from each of the AHSAA’s seven classifications – will be in action this week. Each classification plays a single-elimination, best-of-five tournament.
Action in Classes 1A, 3A and 5A begins Tuesday with quarterfinal and semifinal matches, with championship matches set for Wednesday. In Classes 2A, 4A, 6A and 7A, the quarterfinal and semifinal matches are Wednesday, followed by championship matches on Thursday.
Six of the seven 2024 champs are back to defend their title this week – Pleasant Valley in Class 2A, Mobile Christian in Class 3A, Prattville Christian in Class 4A, UMS-Wright in Class 5A, Spanish Fort in Class 6A and McGill in Class 7A.
Wood and Spanish Fort coach Gretchen Boykin can join the nine previous AHSAA volleyball coaches to win at least six state titles, led by Bayside Academy coach Ann Schilling with 28 state championships. Schilling’s Bayside squad is also back in the Class 7A state tourney.
All Elite 8 state tournament matches will be live streamed over the NFHS Network with the seven championship matches highlighting this week’s action. by the NFHS Network, marking the AHSAA champions crowned during the 2025-26 school year. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online through GoFan.
