On the weekend that we celebrate MLK, nearly 1 year since I started Phoenix Rising TV, and the issuing in of an openly racist Administration I have to have say…Black people we don’t support each other. There are systemic challenges and the psychology behind economic decisions within marginalized communities have us messed up. We are sharecroppers for “the man”. The “sharecropper mentality” stems from centuries of economic exclusion and mistrust, shaping a tendency to gravitate toward established platforms—even when those platforms may not provide equitable returns—simply for perceived legitimacy or exposure.
Platforms like Phoenix Rising TV are invaluable because we offer autonomy, community support, and fair opportunities for Black filmmakers. However, convincing creators to invest in these platforms requires overcoming ingrained doubts about the viability of Black-owned spaces, especially when competing with larger, well-funded entities like Tubi aka FOX.
Hopefully, we will take this upcoming holiday and the days afterwards to do some self-reflecting, so that we will realize that when we come together, we are a a force to be reckoned with!
Thank you for supporting Phoenix Rising TV…we will rise together!
