Peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Alternative chart and quickly becoming a staple of the band’s catalog, “Everlong” fused grunge grit with an almost dreamlike sense of intimacy, its layered production and emotional core striking a rare balance between raw confession and anthemic release. What began as a spontaneous riff evolved into a signature track that continues to resonate as both a love song and a defining statement of late-’90s rock.

By Ron Powers In 1997, Foo Fighters carved out one of alternative rock’s defining moments with “Everlong,” the second single from their breakthrough album The Colour and the Shape. Written by Dave …

MEN. They are a different breed. No denying it. God love ‘em.

But they are also our rocks and our pillars. Our protectors and safe havens. If my husband had his way, he would take every weight of worry and every problem known to man, and place them all on his broad shoulders and carry them for us.

By Lori Welch Brown My good friend Liz recently requested that I write a ‘happy, fun’ column as opposed to the last two Debbie Downers. “Seriously, Lori,” she said. “stop making me cry.” What can I…

While we have featured Union Street Public House as sort of a “sidebar” in previous columns, we thought it deserved some special attention this month.

The entire restaurant is very inviting with both décor and ambiance, and the Tap Room is iconic. There is something about this bar that lends itself to a Cheers kind of place. Whether you are a regular or not, you feel like part of the crowd.

By the Gastronomes While we have featured Union Street Public House (USPH) in this column several times over the last 38 years, we treated the Tap Room side as sort of a “sidebar” in those columns …

The hazy hot and humid days of summer are on their way. Regardless of the heat, my favorite part of summer is cooking out on the grill and relaxing with friends and family. The wonderful part of summer is all the fresh produce that is available at your local Farmers Market.

This month I have made a list of some of my favorite summer recipes. These healthy and flavorful dinners and drinks will be a great way to compliment a nice summer day.

With the change in weather comes adjustments in the way we care for and dress our skin. So, what must you do to get ready for summer? For starters, get a really good sunscreen.

Earlier this year, I had a series of surgeries (all went well) that resulted in my not being able to play, sleep with, and greet my cats when coming and going like I normally do. To top off the insult, I had a nurse living with us for a week and my mother came to live with us for quite a bit longer. As a result, when I had finally (mostly) healed and all the extra company was gone, I noticed that my cats—Gillian and Josephine—seemed a bit more tentative than usual.

On April 21st, a large mass of frigid air settled on the Mid-Atlantic region after the warmest April on record in Virginia. This caused a lot of rapidly growing shoots on our vines (and other plants) to be exposed to many hours of temperatures in the 20s. No, I am not here to talk about how painful that event was for each grower or every industry, but I do have a few thoughts on how we try to recover.

June 12th has been proclaimed “Loving Day” by cities and towns across the country in commemoration of Loving v. Virginia:

The House of Representatives (1) observes the Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia; and (2) commemorates the legacy of Loving v. Virginia in ending the ban on in*******al marriage in the United States and in recognizing that marriage is one of the “basic civil rights of man” at the heart of the 14th Amendment protections.

by (c)2026 Sarah Becker June is known as the Month of Brides. June 2 is the marital day for many famous couples. England’s King Henry V married Catherine of Valoria on June 2, 1420. On June 2…
