It's not a particularly great choice either way, but would you rather be in the winter storm/ice storm warnings off to our northwest, or in another hurricane warning area? Luckily, Cenla is in neither this time, but only a few hundred miles separate the two big weather events happening across our country right now!

I’m so very proud of my youngest granddaughter, Gracie Sinclair. She is a junior in high school and attends Georgetown High School. This is a paper she wrote for her English 1010 college class. It’s an interview with an inanimate object. She chose the American flag. Mary, an American Flag GRACIE: Hi, my name is Gracie, and I am interviewing someone very important to me. Just introduce yourself and tell us anything you’d like us to know. MARY: My name is Mary. I’m an American flag; red, white, and blue; stars and stripes; the whole package! I am a flag at an NFL stadium and, um, I’m so happy to be here. GRACIE: Let’s just start with where you are. What is it like to be a flag for the NFL? MARY: Oh, I love it. The bright lights, the tens of thousands of cheering fans, and my Anthem playing incredibly loud over the speakers. It’s absolutely priceless. GRACIE: Yeah, I mean it sounds amazing. How do you feel about all the recent events going on in the NFL? MARY: Well, it’s pretty discouraging, but I try to stay positive. I love who I am, what I am and it’s just hard, you know, that people don’t like me or support me. I just miss how it used to be. GRACIE: Yeah, being a patriot myself, I think about it a lot. Everything that’s going on, you know. MARY: Yeah, because it’s not just me. I am not just a flag. I represent this country and our military. I just think that people should be proud to be here, somewhere that has freedom and they should stand proudly for the people who die and risk their lives for us to have that freedom. GRACIE: Of course, I completely agree. What is it like for you? What are your feelings when people kneel? MARY: I feel hated. I am hopeful that people will start standing again because if not, then I would have to feel that way all the time. You know, some flags have just completely lost hope, but there are still some fans that stand at the games, just not many. GRACIE: I’m sorry. I couldn’t even imagine it. You represent something so great, so important and are just disrespected like that. What do you do stay optimistic, to get through it? MARY: I remember what it used to be like. GRACIE: What did it used to be like from your perspective? MARY: Oh, I could never forget it. Every player, every coach, every staff member, and every spectator would rise to their feet. They would take their hats off and their hand would be over their hearts. The Star-Spangled Banner would begin to play over the speaker. Tens of thousands of eyes on me, even little kids standing proudly, not yet knowing how important it was. Most of the people were singing along to the song, not caring how good they sounded, but singing because it was for their country, for their military. It sometimes even brought people to tears. I would give anything to have that back. GRACIE: Wow. I don’t even know what to say. It sounds incredible. I hope you get it back, too. I miss when a value to people’s lives was country. Some places, like where I live, have flags everywhere. We have flags in our rooms, on our vehicles, we wear them, and red, white, and blue are our favorite colors. Then, you have places that the only way you can find a flag is if someone is burning it. It breaks my heart. MARY: Yeah. People just aren’t patriotic anymore. To them, this is where they live and nothing else. Our country is just a location to them. That’s the only thing I could think of. GRACIE: You know, in society, kneeling for the flag is socially acceptable and politically correct because they perceive it as a form of a protest instead of disrespect. MARY: A protest, for what? GRACIE: Justice. MARY: Well, I don’t think that disrespecting the flag that stands for our military and our country is justified for a protest. GRACIE: (CHUCKLES) Yeah, I agree. MARY: I mean I believe in protesting peacefully because that’s part of being in America. That’s part of freedom. I don’t think that you should disrespect the country that gives you that freedom and our military that fights for that freedom to protest. GRACIE: I couldn’t have said it better myself. So, what would you say is your favorite part of being an American flag? MARY: Have you ever seen those pictures of ripped up flags held up by servicemembers after winning a battle? They’re bloody, injured, and beaten down, but they still manage to hold that flag up after a victory. GRACIE: Yeah. MARY: That. That’s what I represent. I mean, that obviously that wasn’t me specifically, but we all stand for the same thing. Dignity. Freedom. Perseverance. GRACIE: Yeah, I am proud of that, just being an American. I would think that any flag would be proud of that, especially. What would you say is your least favorite part of being a flag? MARY: Obviously, everything that’s going on right now, but I would say being alone all the time, high up in the air by myself. GRACIE: It must be super lonely; how do you deal with that? MARY: Well, while there aren’t people talking to me or spending time with me specifically all the time, there are people there all the time. That’s a perk of being an NFL flag. The team is practicing, people are cleaning, or the coach is sometimes by himself planning, and of course the fans. Sometimes, it does get lonely and quiet and I can hear the traffic, so I just think. GRACIE: If you don’t mind me asking, what do you think about? MARY: I mainly think about the future or things I can’t do and want to. Not in a sad way or anything just imagining. I think about the day that people proudly stand for my Anthem again and maybe even shed a few tears like before. I think about trying some of that good-looking food that the fans eat (GIGGLES). When the wind is blowing, I don’t think of anything. I just wave in the wind and relax. GRACIE: So, what would you try? MARY: Well, the players have this big cooler of liquid called Gatorade. It is a deep red color, super pretty. I would love to try that. Oh, and the fans eat these chili dogs with the golden yellow melted cheese on top and the fans seem to really enjoy it so I would love to try it. GRACIE: So, your dream meal would be Fruit Punch Gatorade and a chili dog? MARY: Yeah, absolutely. GRACIE: Hmm... So, if you could choose one thing that humans can do for you to do, what would it be? MARY: I would have to say being able to have conversations a lot. I love talking and I’m up on the flagpole all by myself. I watch the humans during the games talking to each other and sometimes they’re just talking and have no idea what’s going on. I watch them talk most of the time they’re there. I love the way their faces light up when they laugh about a comment the other made. I love the way they get excited about a play that was made and just give each other a big hug, but it would just be nice to get to talk to people all the time. GRACIE: Considering that, would you trade being an American flag, something so important, so great for being human and being able to have those connections to people? MARY: You know, Gracie, I have never thought of that before and right now, I didn’t even have to think to answer that question. I have never thought about it because although I love talking, and I’d love to taste those human foods, and I could make real connections with people, I wouldn’t trade being an American flag for the world. I have never thought about it because although it’s hard to stay positive right now, I love what I am. I love being an American flag and representing this country. I think about everything our servicemembers have sacrificed, not even including their lives, and I am almost brought to tears. I think of everything this country has overcome to have the freedoms we have today and what all this country has been through. I think of all the times that people were so injured they could barely stand but stood for the flag. I love what I am. I love what I represent, and I can’t wait for the day people realize what that means again. GRACIE: Wow... That was (PAUSES) powerful. Thanks for coming and sharing with us today, Mary. It truly was an honor to meet you and hear what you have experienced. Thank you.

Please Share. Urgent Assistance Needed On August 27th Hurricane Laura made landfall in Cameron, Louisiana as a Category 4 Hurricane. Millions of residents throughout Southwest Louisiana are now left without homes, power, water, and jobs. My family and I returned to a scene so horrific, it sent chills down my spine. I asked myself "How could our state and city officials allow this to happen to us?" A few years back, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality allowed a landfill to be opened within 1,000 feet of my familys home. The landfill is unlined and contains no groundwater monitoring system, no air monitor, no leachate collection system and no leachate treatment system. Somehow the owner received a permit to discharge into the wetlands and marsh that runs through my familys land. Uh opp aLDEQ records also show that he has began discharging leachate directly into the groundwater supplied to my familys home. When water began to rise during hurricane Laura, it pushed all of the toxic water out of the marsh and covered our property with water so black and toxic, it now leaves sores on your body if it even splashes you while cleaning up debris. YOU THINK THATS BAD? JUST WAIT. In the middle of our little rural and coastal neighborhood exists an Environmental facility. This facility is permitted as a Used Oil Transfer Facility.. Over the past year, I have contacted Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and Department of Health and Hospitals after finding red biohazardous medical waste bags on our property. When I spoke to the regional supervisor, he stated "I have been working here for 25 years. If this business is hauling and disposing of medical waste, I would know about it.." WAIT. So you mean to tell me that this guy is cleaning up crime scenes, transporting and disposing of infectious waste for the city of Lake Charles, and hauling body's back to the property and you dont know about it? Bullsh*t. Pull up on any day and you will see the fleet of medical waste transportation vehicles... They knew and they failed to act. When we arrived back home after Hurricane Laura, there was a horrid smell in the air. What I pulled up on next is something that I will never forget... It was a large red barrel like container with a tag marked "Lake Charles Coroners Office" 7-22-20..not to mention multiple large barrels of overturned oil pouring out into the water and onto the land. I know everyone has their own problems right now to deal with, but we need urgent help. My family lost everything. Our home, our barns, our pasture to graze horses... The water supplied from our water well to the home is black and full of heavy metals, bacteria, and viruses. At this point, we cant even bring our two baby boys nor our livestock home due to leachate and medical waste contamination. If you are in a position to offer assistance or make a donation, my family could really use it right now. If you are in the position to donate, donations can be sent through venmo. The username is @DevinNMoses. For donations of anything else, please send me a message. Thank you and God Bless! Casey & Devin Moses
