Get your child a backpack that is well fitted to them. It should have wide and padded shoulder straps to reduce irritation and ache. They should also not carry a backpack that is more than 15% of their total body weight, as this can eventually cause a back injury.

Check your child’s school supplies for nontoxic compliances. Products like markers, paints, pens, and art supplies should be double-checked. Keep in mind that a product that has been labeled as “conforms to ASTM D-4236” does not mean the product is nontoxic. It only means that any toxic components have been labeled.

When your child is bullied:

Alert school officials to the problems and work with them on solutions.

Teach your child to be comfortable with when and how to ask a trusted adult for help. Ask them to identify who they can ask for help.

Recognize the serious nature of bullying and acknowledge your child's feelings about being bullied.

Help your child learn how to respond by teaching your child how to:

Look the bully in the eye.

Stand tall and stay calm in a difficult situation.

Walk away.

Teach your child how to say in a firm voice:

"I don't like what you are doing."

"Please do NOT talk to me like that."

Encourage your child to make friends with other children.

Support outside activities that interest your child.

Make sure an adult who knows about the bullying can watch out for your child's safety and well-being when you cannot be there.

Monitor your child's social media or texting interactions so you can identify problems before they get out of hand.

School Bus Safety

Make habit of arriving at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival of the bus.

Make sure your child stays out of the street and avoids excessive horseplay while waiting for the school bus.

Be sure the bus comes to a complete stop before getting on or off.

When riding the bus, make sure your child understands they must remain seated and keep their head and arms inside the bus at all times.

Do not shout or distract the driver.

Do not walk in the driver’s “blind spot” — this is the area from the front of the bus to about 10 feet in front of the bus.

Back to school means back to morning routines. As you well know, mornings can be particularly challenging times for children to get up and ready for school on time.

Even if school ends up being in your living room, it's still important to “get ready for school" every morning. To help your child and family be successful, take time before school starts to write down, review and post what the new morning routine will look like during the school year.

For younger kids, create a behavior chart to set up expectations. For older kids, simply write out the steps they will take in the morning and discuss how much time they will need for each. Display the timeline in their room as a reminder each morning.

DRIVERS, SLOW DOWN!

Drivers should slow down as children head back to school. Know that yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is getting ready to stop ─ motorists should slow down and be prepared to stop. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign indicate the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off.

Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped. Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety. This includes two and four-lane highways. If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing lanes may proceed without stopping. Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety.

If you drive your child to school, teach them to:

Always wear a seat belt. Younger children should use car seats or booster seats until the lap-shoulder belt fits properly (typically for children ages 8-12 and over 4’9”), and ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old.

If your student takes the bus to school, teach them to:

Get to their bus stop early and stand away from the curb while waiting for the bus to arrive.

Board the bus only after it has come to a complete stop and the driver or attendant has instructed them to get on. And only board their bus, never an alternate one.

Stay in clear view of the bus driver and never walk behind the bus.
