🛑 Stop believing the myths. They are costing you money.
I hear it every day. Your uncle, your neighbor, and the internet comments section all say the same things: “They blow away in the wind,” “They’re made of glue,” or “It’s a bad investment.”
I’ve been in this industry for years—selling, inspecting, and insuring these homes right here in Louisiana. I’m here to tell you: These myths are outdated.
While you're paying rent waiting for a stick-built “forever home,” you could be building equity. Let’s break down the 7 biggest myths I hear at the dealership.
👇 THE TRUTH FROM A NERD 👇
1️⃣ MYTH: "It loses value the second you drive it off the lot." THE NERD TRUTH: This isn't a car; it's a home. I personally sold a 25-year-old home that retailed for $19,900 brand new and resold it for $32,000. How? Because value is about location and care. If I build a mansion in a bad neighborhood, it loses value. If you put a nice manufactured home in a good area, it gains value.
2️⃣ MYTH: "They are unsafe in hurricanes (The Tornado Magnet)." THE NERD TRUTH: It’s not the wind; it’s the trees. When Hurricane Laura hit in 2020, we recorded winds of 150+ mph less than half a mile from our lot. We had 15 homes on the ground. The damage? We lost one storm door and 5 or 6 shingles. That’s it. Why? Because we didn't have trees crashing into them. Modern Wind Zone standards work.
3️⃣ MYTH: "Financing is a nightmare (or Cash Only)." THE NERD TRUTH: Look at the "Total Payout," not just the rate. Buyers freak out when they see higher rates, but they forget the fees. I’ve seen loans with higher rates that actually have a lower monthly payment because the fees were lower and the term was shorter (25 years vs 30). 💡 Pro Tip: Make one extra payment a year. It can chop years off your loan!
4️⃣ MYTH: "They are energy hogs." THE NERD TRUTH: Not anymore. Old trailers had single-pane windows. Today? We use thermopane, double-paned insulated windows and high-grade insulation. Builders like Clayton are even rolling out hybrid heat pump water heaters. If you’re buying new, you’re buying efficiency.
5️⃣ MYTH: "They are held together by staples and glue." THE NERD TRUTH: We use heavy-duty lag bolts and steel. It is literally illegal to rely on staples for structure. Manufacturers use lag bolts to secure the floor to the frame and steel strapping for the walls. We use #2 lumber and PEX plumbing as the standard—better than some site-built specs!
6️⃣ MYTH: "They are all cookie-cutter boxes." THE NERD TRUTH: Have you seen the Barndominium? Sure, single-wides are rectangles. But we can build homes in 2, 3, or even 4 sections! We recently built a Deer Valley Barndominium that is two stories high in the center. If you can dream it, we can usually build it.
7️⃣ MYTH: "They don't last long." THE NERD TRUTH: Treat it like a temple, not a tent. If you treat a home like temporary housing, it will rot. That applies to a brick house too. If you maintain it—seal your leaks, watch your cabinets—it will last. Longevity depends on maintenance, not the factory.
