Menótra

Menótra Menótra is space for women & girls experiencing hormonal changes to pray and worship Jesus Christ.

Menótra is space for women and girls experiencing hormonal changes to gather together to be in and with Jesus Christ: the ultimate paradise, refuge, and light. Together, we reorient our bodies to corporate prayer and adoration of Jesus Christ in seasons when we feel biologically unequipped to do so. Hormonal changes sometimes weaken our bodies and deregulate our mood ⎯ leaving us feeling irritable

, fatigued, and/or increasingly critical of ourselves, others, and God ⎯ but we gather to Jesus in Menótra to reverence the redemptive work of Christ’s crucified and resurrected body and to reconnect with the female body He created and called good through worship.

There are songs in our heart that beg to be sang to the Lord whether we can hold a note or not. Songs that want to sang in public — in parks and hotels and grocery aisles. This is your reminder to be with the Lord, to sing to him, any and everywhere.

On my walk, I passed by this dollhouse of a house and it immediately screamed, “Welcome home!” I don’t know who lives here, but I imagine they start to feel warm as they near. I hope the same is true of Holy Spirit as he moves about the rooms in my heart. I hope upon entry each room declares “you are welcome; come right in.”

The Book of Psalms, Lamentations and Job demonstrate the dynamism of prayer. David, Job and Jeremiah express the breadth of their humanity in their prayers to the Lord. They remind us that depending on the season, the hour, the varying condition of our hearts moment to moment, prayer not only takes on a different sound, but a different posture. I imagine what Job’s prayers looked like to the Lord as he sat in a heap of ashes. I imagine his hands covered in soot, beating the ground as he pleaded with God for death in the midst of his grief and anger. I imagine the Lord catching each still frame of his son’s face just as he caught his tears.

May the prophets and kings of old remind us that prayer doesn’t have to look one way to be legitimate or heard by God. Our conversations with the Father take on diverse life and expression as we walk with him.

Day 3 of Bleed 1

Bleeding each month is, in part, a practice in humility. I’m reminded of my fragility, my limited autonomy. When it’s a good month, I remember my body is not my enemy. She’s a dear friend. So I listen, I don’t dismiss what she wishes to say. I loosen the grip in my pelvis and allow the wave of pain to pass through me without resistance. Each month she asks for a new yielding.

In honesty, my body is less demanding than the Lord, for his invitation to surrenderance comes upon each breath I take. Most breaths, I fight. My head rises and my ego swells because isn’t this my life, isn’t this my body, I get to decide. And I do. That’s why submission is an invitation. That’s why he makes it each second of the day. Because humbling ourselves before a perfect and holy God is the best choice.

May the condition of our bodies (and more) lead us to submission before the Lord, acknowledging his great perfection & supremacy and our great need of him.

Pride is deceptive, subtle; it quietly slivers through holes in our hearts and lies coiled in hidden places as it matures. Many times, we don’t realize it’s ...

Day 2 of Bleed 1

There’s so much to do. There’s not enough time, not enough me, too much blood. I’m sluggish (in body and in thought); the whole of me feels like dead weight.

I was dead weight. When I was drinking my way to relief and lusting after men and women whose names I didn’t care to know and writing toward identity and status, I was a dead woman, sluggish in spirit. And then a strong man came along. He hauled the weight of my iniquities as heavy as a tree up a steep hill. He took the death I so rightfully deserved. For three days, they thought my dead weight had the final say. For three days, they thought surely my dead weight had eaten away at his body. But on the third day, that strong man rose.

On day 2, there may be much to do; there may be little time and I am surely not enough. But thanks to Jesus Christ, there is too much blood. I rest in his victory, for he alone has completed the work.

Christ completed the work on the cross. He alone won the power over sin, hell and the grave and because of his ultimate victory on Calvary, we are victorious...

Day 1 of Bleed 1

I’m tired and ravenous. Throughout the day I want Netflix’s the Residence, that new pint of Goat Cheese and Red Cherries ice cream, the toilet for a little while, Auntie’s big pills, more blankets. Though Scripture describes Holy Spirit as the Comforter and Jesus as the Bread of Life, I don’t immediately look to them for ease and satisfaction on day 1. But they are patient.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

He gently leads me home as I spill out of myself.

While we are shedding blood, we remember the blood of Christ that was shed for our sins. We lean all the more into his mercy and grace, knowing he is faithful to give us rest and power.

Jesus Christ is the only way home to the Father. His Spirit leads us in all righteousness as we become more and more like him. His way is narrow, and it dema...
