Happy 235th Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard!

From fighting narcos to rescuing civilians in hurricane-force winds, the Coasties have been holding the line since 1790—Semper Paratus isn’t just a motto, it’s a way of life.

To our Coast Guard vets out there: we see you. You might’ve been the quiet pros in a sea of louder branches, but your impact has always been loud and clear.

Drop an anchor emoji if you served. Tag a Coastie who still doesn’t know how to take a day off.

On this day in 1881, U.S. Marine Corps legend Smedley Butler was born. Two-time Medal of Honor recipient. Straight shooter. And late in life, one of the loudest voices warning about the military-industrial complex before it even had a name.

If you’ve never read his speech “War is a Racket,” today’s a good day to change that. Especially if you’re navigating your own mission after service.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about perspective—from someone who saw it all and still had the guts to speak out.

Happy birthday, Devil Dog. Semper Fi.

Did you catch The Ohio State University President Ted Carter—retired Vice Admiral, United States Naval Academy Academy grad—on CBS Face The Nation with Margaret Brennan last Sunday?

He lays out how OSU is holding the line on free speech, academic freedom and military-aligned research—even as other schools get hit with federal scrutiny, funding freezes and lawsuits.

For vets wondering where higher ed is headed—and where you might still belong—this is the perspective you’ve been waiting for.

G.I. Jobs also interviewed Ted Carter in our February 2024 issue featuring College Presidents Who Served.
