Administrators were allegedly hesitant to adopt sanctuary policies so as not to draw attention to GVSU. However, they did express a desire to work with students and will likely hold a follow-up meeting. During the meeting, GVSU President Philomena Mantella also allegedly made derogatory remarks about a student who was experiencing facial tics.

On Sunday, March 15th, at 1:36 a.m. a Kirkhof-bound Laker Line bus with roughly a dozen students on board missed the turn into the Kirkhof bus loop. Nearly an hour later, the bus was stuck in the east Kirkhof lawn.

The driver left the bus and walked towards the pond, disappearing off camera for about two minutes. At 2:26 a.m. the bus turned left, taking the sidewalk towards the Kirkhof center. About 30 seconds later the bus got stuck, leaving deep track marks.

The police report reveals more information about the incident. No arrests were made and a citation was sent to the driver’s home address for careless driving.

Grand Valley State University’s Department of Public Safety issued an announcement Thursday afternoon saying they had received a false threat against the school via email earlier in the day.

The threat was deemed a hoax by GVPD, but the department completed a “comprehensive search” of a yet unnamed building to confirm there was no suspicious activity.

Two students were briefly detained by Grand Valley State University officers Friday night following a report that an individual was carrying what turned out to be a fake axe.

Police conducted the search of North Campus in Allendale. According to GVPD, officers tracked the subject with the fake axe to Pickard Living Center, where he and another individual were temporarily detained. The axe was quickly determined to be a prop, and the subjects were released.

Photos and videos circulating social media appear to show officers searching Mackinac Hall. Witnesses report seeing officers conducting the search with weapons drawn. According to GVPD, there was no confirmed threat to the campus community.

“Given the initial report, officers had their weapons out while searching for the subjects,” said GVPD. “Per protocol, if there was a confirmed emergency on campus, a GVSUAlert! would be sent to the community.”

Students have expressed concerns over not receiving communication from the University about the incident.
