Good afternoon, we have received a letter from Ransom Willard, the President of American Legion Ambulance Association. It reads as follows:

To the residents of Woodstown and Pilesgrove,

On behalf of the American Legion Ambulance Association, I want to thank our communities for over seventy years of trust, support, and partnership. That support has taken many forms, including volunteer service, financial backing, and a shared commitment to ensuring reliable emergency medical care for our neighbors.

Over the past decade, we worked intentionally to build an EMS system designed to be sustainable, locally rooted, and fiscally responsible. Our goal was to minimize taxpayer burden through shared services while expanding coverage and improving readiness. That effort grew to include nine of Salem County’s fourteen municipalities, with progress underway toward broader County and State collaboration.

It is with genuine disappointment that I share that our organization will no longer be providing 9-1-1 emergency medical services to Woodstown and Pilesgrove effective January 1, 2026. On December 11, the Borough of Woodstown elected to award the contract for these services to an out-of-state provider.
This decision was not driven by a demonstrated inability on our part to provide quality service, nor was it compelled by financial necessity. In fact, the adopted contract will result in a significantly higher cost to taxpayers over the life of the agreement.

After decades of continuous service, including more than sixty years of volunteer operations, it is difficult to reconcile this outcome with the history of partnership we believed existed between the Association and our elected leadership. While we respect the authority of municipal officials to make decisions, it is fair to say that this process and its conclusion were deeply discouraging.

Our commitment to EMS and Salem County does not end here however. The American Legion Ambulance Association will continue to serve where called upon and will remain an active participant in supporting emergency medical services, public safety, and community health throughout the region.

To every volunteer, employee, donor, and resident who stood with us over the years, thank you. It has been an honor to serve.

Respectfully,
Ransom Willard
President, Board of Directors
American Legion Ambulance Association

On behalf of The News of Salem County, we would personally like to thank the organization for all of the blood sweat and tears that have gone into the organization over the years. We thank them for their extensive service to the community both in Woodstown, Pilesgrove and wherever called.
