💭 This one is hard to sit with.
Weston is a local infant currently on hospice, facing a rare and terminal condition. According to the family, services have not been denied, but they’ve been told those services cannot be provided in Jackson County due to a perceived conflict of interest, as a relative works for DHHS. Instead, they’ve been directed to seek services through another county, a process they say has caused delays during a medically critical and time-sensitive period.
It raises a broader question that’s hard to ignore: how does it make sense that families live, work, and pay into a system in their own community, yet may be unable to access services locally when they need them most?
And more importantly, what does this mean for everyone else?
If having a relative who works in the county can impact where you receive services, is this something other families should expect? Has this happened before? Is this standard practice, or something new? And who is ultimately responsible for making these decisions?
Because if this can happen in a medically urgent situation, it’s not just about one family, it’s something every family in this community should understand.
The community has shown up in a big way for this family. The support has been real, immediate, and powerful. But at the same time, this situation highlights a clear tension between policy and practice.
Is it typical for families to be referred out of their own county because of a perceived conflict of interest? Or are there options, like staff recusal, that could allow services to continue without disruption?
When situations are time-sensitive and medically complex, these decisions matter. Understanding how they’re made, and whether there are alternatives, is critically important.
People aren’t just upset, they’re asking for answers.
Jackson County, keep showing up the way you have been, because what you’re doing right now matters more than you know.
