WATZ has a long, rich heritage in the broadcast industry. The station was the first commercial broadcast facility in Alpena, and one of the first in Northern Lower Michigan. It is still owned by the same family who founded the station in 1946.
WATZ-WRGZ plays a Hot Country format, throwing in some of the classics that seem to only get better with age. For over 25 years, Steve Wright has anchored WATZ's popular morning show, which features "Feats of Bowling Greatness", trivia, and Trademart, a well-loved WATZ tradition. Mary Thurston keeps you company in the late morning and early afternoon with her quick wit and quirky sense of humor. Nick, your “Okie in the Afternoon” gets you galloping towards evening, while Mike Rhea makes nighttime the right time to listen to WATZ. Relax on the weekends with shows like Rowdy Yates' Country Gold, Trucker Radio, Rick Jackson's Country Classics, New Music Nashville, CT 40 with Bob Kinsley, Country Gold with JR Wooster, Country Hitmakers, and Gospel Music Time with Susie Martin. Elaine Misiak kicks off the new week with the legendary "Sunday Morning in Poland" show from 9 to 11 AM.
The WATZ News Department is led by longtime News Director Bruce Johnson, keeping you informed with the most cogent, complete, and trustworthy reporting in the region.
