Adventuring Light Project caver! Taking light into the darkness. Follow me underground!

I sometimes appreciate seeing things like this when searching for a particular passage. This is a very popular, well visited cave.

I’ll never forget coming to this point in the cave and just being stunned and awestruck. To be among the first to see such beauty is a gift I’ll always be thankful for.

Good morning, friends! I’ve got a cave ethics question for you, and I’m really curious to hear your thoughts.

Imagine this: you and your survey team are exploring a virgin cave when you stumble across a passage that’s delicate, untouched, and breathtaking—the most beautiful spot you’ve ever seen underground.

Here’s the dilemma: stepping through will inevitably cause some kind of damage.
👉 Do you carefully proceed and survey it anyway?
👉 Do you block it off with rocks to keep others from going in?
👉 Or do you survey it first, then seal it off?

What would you do?

A beautiful area that wasn’t on either of the existing maps! This leads to a huge dome there’s also not on the map. The dome was the area that had the inscription in carbide from 1959. It said Atlanta Grotto. We’re going to find out who was in the Atlanta Grotto in 1959 (couldn’t have been many people) and see if we can contact them about this cave. I wonder why they never turned it in. It’s all a mystery. pic: James Hoffman

You don’t have to, but if you want to support our awesome project to reopen a cave that’s been closed for 20 years, we need bolts and hangers! There’s a huge dome that needs to be climbed and we have the people and the momentum to accomplish this! I know many cavers follow our page. If you are cleaning out your garage and have some 1/2” or 3/8” stainless steel bolts with hangers to send our way, we will put them to good use! If you have a drill and/or batteries we’d love to have them too! Any caving gear you have that you no longer want or use, we’ll sort through it and use it. Or if you just want to send me a taco. 🤪

Goodness, I think I am the only female on the internet asking for hardware.🙈 fixe hardware online sells these things at a great price! We need 304 or 316 stainless steel. My partner, Dane messaged me and was like-post these, please! Those are the last 2 pics.🙂 We use those the most.

Meet Connor!
We first crossed paths with him outside a cave, about to cave solo. Before you scold him, his friends bailed last minute but he was determined to go anyway. He had his gear, he was ready, and as the Lord would have it, we showed up!

Connor didn’t ask to be adopted, but when you find yourself in the company of two moms and a Wil Lim, you get adopted. He spent the rest of the day with us, rode our rope down the pit, and got a crash course in “how cavers do it”.

Coming from the tree-climbing world, Connor already had the skills—just a lot more gear than what we use. Since then, he’s been pit-bouncing with Wil a few more times, and we’re pretty sure he’s hooked.

Welcome to caving, Connor! You’re gonna love it. 🪨🧗‍♂️💡

What do you think of the old vs the new rigging for this cave? Which would you rather hang your rope on?

This cave was first mapped in the 1960s, but the explorers missed almost everything. They recorded just 200 feet of passage and left a “?” by a lead they didn’t think was worth checking out.

They were wrong. Very wrong.

Hidden beyond that point was at least 2,000 feet of passage leading to a massive dome. Someone actually made it back there in 1959—crawling through long, wet crawls to reach it—not once, but twice. Yet, they never reported it. No maps. No notes. Just the faint glow of their carbide lamps burned into the rock.

Why didn’t they tell anyone? Why keep something so incredible secret? We may never know.
