ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – Altus Air Force Base will be conducting an airfield pre-burn this weekend on either March 29 or March 30, subject to weather conditions.

In preparation of the Altus Airpower Stampede Open House and Air Show on April 12-13, the performer Tora! Tora! Tora! requires an airfield pre-burn seven days prior to their performance.

The Air Force Wildland Fire Center will have their team on site on March 29 and March 30 to help train and assist Altus AFB firefighters throughout the pre-burn.

Smoke and flames are expected during the pre-burn so do not be alarmed if smoke or flames are visible from the Altus AFB airfield during this time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Altus AFB Public Affairs at (580) 481-7700, or by email at [email protected].

The 97th Air Mobility Wing serves as “Mobility’s Hometown,” training 80% of the Air Force’s mobility aircrew on the C-17 Globemaster III, KC-135 Stratotanker, and KC-46 Pegasus.

If you have an idea for an article or know of a Jackson County resident deserving of a feature story, email those ideas to [email protected] or text or call 580-335-1395.

Unfortunately, gone are the days when small newspapers had a full staff of writers and researchers. The only way we know of things happening in the community is if community members share them with us.

I look forward to hearing about your ideas!

On Saturday, Oct. 19, adoptable pets from across southwest Oklahoma will take over the Jackson County Expo Center for Barktoberfest. This will be the biggest multi-shelter adoption event in southwest Oklahoma, featuring adoptable dogs and cats from seven shelters and rescue groups. The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. In addition to adoptable pets, the event will also have a live band, a variety of vendors, food trucks, bounce houses/child play area, as well as a raffle and silent auction.

According to data from Best Friends Animal Society, a leading animal welfare organization working to end the killing of cats and dogs in America’s shelters, about 78,500 cats and dogs entered Oklahoma and animal shelters in 2023, with more than 9,300 killed just because they found themselves temporarily without a home—84% of them were dogs. Shelters across Oklahoma are currently at or over capacity and through Barktoberfest the community has an opportunity to help increase lifesaving in the region by making the choice to adopt a pet rather than purchase one from a store or breeder.

“Barktoberfest will not only rally community support for adoptable dogs and cats but will unite animal welfare organizations from across southwest Oklahoma to help pets find loving homes,” said Kelly Burley, senior strategist, Best Friends Animal Society “Pets belong in homes and not in shelters—adoption is one of the most immediate and impactful ways Oklahomans can making a lifesaving difference in the region.”

The adoption event will have dozens of adoptable pets available from participating shelters and rescues including Altus Animal Control, Cache Animal Control, Hobart Animal Services, Hollis Animal Shelter, Magnum Animal Shelter, Sentinel Animal Shelter, and Snyder Animal Shelter. Adoption fees vary by organization.
The Jackson County Expo Center is located at 412 Todd Ln, Altus, Ok. To learn more about the event, visit the Barktoberfest page.

History of The Altus Times

The modern Altus Times is printed bi-weekly -- Wednesday and Saturday -- and is dedicated to providing all local content and superior print and picture quality. The Altus Times has been named the 2017 Oklahoma Associated Press News Executive Division I third-place winner for General Excellence.

Altus Times was founded as a weekly newspaper by J. Ed Van Meter in December, 1901. It was consolidated with two other newspapers into the Weekly Altus Times-Democrat around 1916. It began daily publication in 1928. The newspaper was renamed the Altus Times on August 1, 1984.

The paper was previously owned by Heartland Publications. In 2012 Versa Capital Management merged Heartland, Ohio Community Media, former Freedom papers it had acquired, and Impressions Media into a new company, Civitas Media. Civitas Media sold its Oklahoma papers to Greystone Media Group in 2017.
