Part of the boys' school yesterday was learning to butcher our quail! Youtube was great for finding a super helpful and quick tutorial. They did a wonderful job and we processed a total of 27 quail... more meat in the freezer! We had quail for dinner and it tastes really good.. almost a cross between chicken and turkey to me..lol.

Some days farm life is just so rough and heartbreaking. 😞 We woke up this morning to find Sandy had calved a week early to a little bull calf who, unfortunately, didn't survive. This is the first calf we have ever lost..😭💔 It broke my heart to have to take him away from his mama who was cleaning him so diligently and mooing at him to get up. This has definitely been a super tough week on the homestead.. emotionally and physically.

We had lots of heavy rain last night that resulted in major flooding.. which means lots of fencing was messed up, posts pulled out of the ground, logs stuck , with trash and debris laying everywhere.. 😞 Thankfully my girls are smart enough to get to high ground and out of danger, but it's always a sleepless night for me when this happens. I got up around midnight to check on everyone and the whole front field looked like a lake and was under about 4ft of water in some places. You can see in some of the pics that it was high enough to completely cover our cattle panels. Everything is a wet muddy mess and it makes for a long, hard day of fixing fence line, so the cows don't get out, but I'm super thankful all of our animals are fine and accounted for. 🙏

Our newest addition is Sheep!!! 🎉🐑😁 We've spent several months talking and planning about getting started with hair sheep... so it's super exciting to finally arrive to "unloading day"! 😊 We've been working with them everyday so they get used to us and hopefully get a schedule down and know to come for breakfast and dinner each day..lol. I just love hearing their little baa's 😍 and seeing them work on clearing brush off our hillside!

I'm finally getting around to posting some updates on our little homestead! Most of April consisted of putting up electric fencing on a large section of our woods in prep for the new additions we've been planning on adding. It was one of the toughest projects we've worked on to date.. so we are so glad it's finally done! (My garmin app says I walked about 140 miles over this past month..😱😬) I'll be sharing what's new on the farm later today 😉..but for now.. any guesses as to what it might be!? 😀

🐥😊 We have Bielefelder hen chicks available - $5/ea. Alum Bridge, WV.

This is an auto-sexing breed, which means the hens and roos are different colors when they hatch and can be sorted right away! I have been really pleased so far with how calm and docile they are. The adult birds are beautiful.. I've included pictures of some of our hens and rooster.. as well as the eggs they lay. Just send us a message if you are interested!

Trying something different this year.. seed snails! 🌱 And yes.. I'm probably way behind starting these pepper seeds 🤦‍♀️ but life has been crazy lately.. so the garden just may be a little late this year. 🙃 Anyone else ever try this method?
