Dear Melissa
My teenage daughter has always been well-adjusted and popular, but lately she’s shifting to a new group of friends who don’t have the best reputations. For now, other parents tell me she’s actually a positive influence on them, but I worry it’s only a matter of time before their bad habits like missing schoolwork and rule breaking start to rub off on her. She still has lots of motivated, studious friends, but she seems less and less interested in spending time with them. I’m afraid that if I push too hard about who she spends time with, she’ll either pull away from me or double down. Do I let her figure it out or step in before it’s too late? Is there anything I can do that won’t backfire?
