Dear Melissa
My wife recently inherited her parents’ house in another state. It’s the home she grew up in and she’s very attached to it emotionally, and she wants us to move there and start the next chapter of our lives in a place that means a lot to her. I get the appeal. We’d own the house outright, the schools are better than the ones our kids attend now, and it’s a smaller, tighter-knit community, but I’d have to leave my current job and find a new one, and I’m pretty sure I’d be taking a significant pay cut. My wife argues that not having a mortgage will more than make up for the lower income, but I keep trying to explain that a paid-off house still comes with property taxes, insurance, maintenance, and all the other costs of ownership. When I run the numbers, our housing costs would still be about half of what we currently pay in rent, which is great, but not the same thing as living for free. I think we should sell the house, invest the money, and make decisions based on what’s best for our family financially. She sees selling it as giving up a piece of her family and her childhood. How can I get her to separate the emotional value of the house from the practical realities?
