Dear Melissa
My wife's family gets together every year for Labor Day weekend at this old rental cabin in the mountains. I like her family, but I dread this trip every year. There are too many people crammed into too few bedrooms, no cell service or Internet, and three straight days of outdoor activities that just aren’t my thing. A couple of years ago, I had a work thing and couldn't make it, and I gotta tell you, missing this trip and having the whole weekend to myself was glorious! I’ve already laid the groundwork for skipping it again this year. I told a bit of a white lie about a work deadline. It's true that I have a deadline, but I could take the weekend off if I wanted to, but I DON'T want to. My wife is disappointed and I’m feeling a little guilty. Should I just be honest with her or is it better to just say "Sorry I can't go this year"?

Dear Melissa
My neighbor called the cops on me and accused me of “poisoning” her kids. Over the weekend, I was grilling out some burgers when I saw her kids playing in the backyard. They walked over and said it smelled good, and I asked where their mom was. They said she was out for a few hours, so I asked if they’d eaten and if they thought their mom would mind if they had a burger. So, I cooked up a few more and everyone had a good time with full bellies. Three hours later, the cops showed up. Apparently, my neighbor is a “strict vegan,” which I had no knowledge of, and she’s raising her kids in “an environment that is kind and friendly to all animals.” Talk about awkward. Thankfully, the police pretty much laughed it off and asked me to refrain from feeding the kids in the future…which I’m fine with. Now, however, I’m wondering how to deal with a neighbor that’ll go to those kinds of lengths to make a point about her life choices. It feels kind of messed up to me.
