Some people wait for community to happen. Courtney Brown builds it.

As co-owner of The 806 Coffee + Lounge, she has helped create a home for artists, creators and community on Amarillo’s historic Route 66. As founder of the Amarillo Reproductive Freedom Alliance - ARFA- she helped bring people together to stave off a controversial local proposition.

Courtney is fierce, joyful and willing to jump in headfirst when she sees the chance to create something good. Hear her story this week on Hey Amarillo.

Opening a school is a pretty big leap.

For Jessie McMeans, it was also the culmination of years spent thinking about what education could look like if families were more involved, kids were better met where they are, and the surrounding community had a real voice.

This year, she opened Golden Plains Community School on Amarillo’s north side.

Jessie is passionate, thoughtful, and clearly following a tug she’s felt for a long time.

I have a real appreciation for what Scouting can offer kids and families, being a Scouts mom myself. So, unsurprisingly, I loved getting to sit down with Brian Tobler, Scout Executive for our local Prairie Sky Council - Scouting America.

We talk about what’s happening in Scouting across the Panhandle, but we also get into the bigger stuff: raising resilient kids, developing leadership, learning to tackle hard things and creating opportunities for families to put down the screens and get outside together.

There’s something pretty valuable about giving kids space to explore, fail, figure things out and discover what they’re capable of—and Scouting has been doing that for generations. Brian and I had a great conversation about how that mission is evolving and what’s ahead for Scouting in our area.

Devin Singleton is a videographer and producer who has spent much of his career helping tell other people’s stories. His latest project comes from a story much closer to home.

Devin lost his brother to su***de. Now, he’s creating a limited series for Panhandle PBS centered on people who know what it means to lose someone they love this way.

Our conversation starts with Devin’s career in media and videography, but it becomes something much deeper: a conversation about grief, the people left behind after a su***de, and whether some of the ways we talk about su***de are actually helping.

This is a tough episode of Hey Amarillo. It is also one I think is deeply worth hearing.

From athletic coach to fashion designer, Matthew Rosas has taken a pretty unexpected path — and I loved getting to hear where it’s led him.

Matthew is building his fashion brand, Momentum Of Roses, right here in Amarillo, creating original streetwear, producing fashion shows, and upcycling finds from America’s Best Thrift Store into entirely new pieces.

I’ll admit, I didn’t know much about the fashion world going into this conversation, and Matthew gave me a fascinating look inside it: where inspiration comes from, how an idea becomes a piece of clothing, and how art, family, and place can all find their way into what you create.

And the thing that struck me most about Matthew? The heart behind all of it.

This is a really good conversation about creativity, reinvention, and having the courage to build something you love.

While building an incredible career as a General Manager for the largest security company in the world, Elton never stopped investing in the community that shaped him. What started by helping just 25 families has grown into a nonprofit that now serves thousands of families every year through Christmas gifts, scholarships, utility assistance, and so much more.

He's funny, authentic, and one of those people who simply sees a need and gets to work.

This conversation is about leadership, generosity, and what happens when someone refuses to forget where they came from.

As our community mourns the loss of Gwen Hicks, I re-release this episode with her and former Hey Amarillo host, Jason Boyett, in 2023.

Gwen’s impact is clear in this conversation, and in the many, many people she touched and legacy she leaves. It is my sincerest hope that listeners may revisit to hear - and soak up - her love, compassion, and conviction - and her joy.

This podcast also acts as an archive of people and their stories, and I am deeply honored to carry that. On a personal note, Jason warned me I’d have to re-release posthumously and how hard that would be. I couldn’t have imagined the first would be a friend’s. I am listening to her voice tonight in heartbreak, comfort, and motivation.
