Happy 4th of July, Friday!
July 4th: TODAY IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY!
1955, Gene Vincent's leg is crushed when a car hits his motorcycle in Franklin, VA. Vincent has to wear a steel brace on it afterward. Vincent breaks out as a hitmaker in Spring 1956 with "Be-Bop-A-Lula!" Danger follows him however as he's later injured again in the taxi crash that kills Eddie Cochran!
1958, The Everly Brothers hit the top of the UK charts when, "All I Have To Do Is Dream," goes #1 in England! It was already #1 in hitting the Top of the Billboard charts (in the final few months before the Hot 100 debuted.) on May 12th for the first of five weeks.
1959, Island Records is founded in Jamaica. Yeah, that island!
1959, "Greenfields" by The Brothers Four is released. It doesn't debut on the Billboard Hot 100 until 2/22/60, but races into the top five to peak at #2 on 4/24/60, where it sits for four weeks.
1964, The Beach Boys ride their little deuce coupe all the way to the top of the charts, when "I Get Around" hits #1 for the first of two weeks! Meanwhile, British Invasion pop artist Millie Small peaks at #2 for a week with "My Boy Lollipop!"
1964, The Rolling Stones appear as jurists on the BBC-TV show, Juke Box Jury!
1966, The Lovin' Spoonful release, "Summer In The City," which debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 on 7/16/66 at #53! It hits #1 five weeks later on 8/13/66, where it stays for three weeks!
1966, The Beatles, on a whirlwind world tour play two shows at Rizal Football Stadium in the Philippines before a 2-show total of 80-thousand fans! The next day they are greeted by an angry mob at the airport, after refusing to meet with President Marcos. They also lose their police security en route to the airport as they try to fly to India!
1969, Grand Funk Railroad plays the Atlanta Pop Festival! Of course Hot-lanta is is very hot, which leads singer Mark Farner to remove his shirt, which results in applause. It becomes a routine part of every show. Also on the bill at the two-day festival, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Winter, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker, Blood Sweat & Tears, Chuck Berry, Spirit, Chicago and Paul Butterfield.
1970, American Top 40 with Casey Kasem debuts! His first #1 song? "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" by Three Dog Night!
1971, The Fillmore West in San Francisco closes after just three years and a weeklong series of farewell performances from Santana, The Grateful Dead, Boz Scaggs and more.
1971, Don McPherson, lead singer for The Main Ingredient, dies at 29 from leukemia. The band soon re-groups behind a new lead singer, Cuba Gooding, Sr.
1974, Steely Dan break up the band to focus on studio recordings (just like The Beatles did). It's their last show until 1993, is in Santa Monica CA.
1974, Singer Barry White and Love Unlimited member, Glodean James marry.
1974, The Tony Orlando & Dawn Show premieres on CBS-TV!
1976, Paul Revere of Paul Revere & The Raiders gets married on the Bicentennial, on stage at Kings Island Amusement Park in Cincinnati, during a concert being put on by his band! So, happy anniversary?
1977, Bass player, Gary Valentine, of Blondie quits.
1980, The Beach Boys play a free show in Washington DC! 500-thousand fans attend! Interior Secretary James Watt is outraged!
1982, Singer, Ozzy Osborne and his manager, Sharon Arden marry in Hawaii. Sharon is the daughter of Black Sabbath's manager, They have three children and are still together!
1982, Neil Diamond writes the song, "Heartlight" after seeing movie, "E.T." with Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager.
1984, Ringo Starr sits in with the Beach Boys at their show in Miami FL.
1986, Farm Aid II is held in Manor TX at the Manor Downs Racetrack! On the bill are The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Emmylou Harris, Jason & The Scorchers, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Vince Neil and Willie Nelson
1987, John Fogerty headlines a Vietnam Veterans benefit concert at The Capital Center in Washington DC (technically Landover MD). Also on the bill were Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder and Kris Kristofferson. The show was broadcast on HBO.
1987, Genesis wrap a four-night, sellout stand at Wembley Stadium in London!
1990, Kiss lead singer, Paul Stanley suffered neck and back injuries in a car crash in NJ.
1992, John Phillips, of The Mama's & The Papa's, receives a new liver, getting a transplant in Los Angeles.
2002, George Harrisons attacker, Michael Abram, was released 19 months after getting the O.K. from a mental health review tribunal.
2003, Singer, band leader, Barry White dies at 58. White suffered a stroke while waiting for a kidney transplant and never recovered.
2005, Rockabilly's "Big Al" Downing dies at 65 from leukemia.
2007, The Drifters, Bill Pinkney suffers a heart attack and dies at 81.
2009, Manager of both The Beatles and The Stones, at the same time, Allen Klein, dies from complications due to diabetes and alzheimers. Klein also famously managed The Kinks and his record label ABKCO, included The Animals, Herman's Hermits, Bobby Womack, Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell and more.
2009, Drake Levin, guitar for Paul Revere & The Raiders, dies from cancer at 62.
2012, Late Queen singer, Freddie Mercury's famous half-white/ half-black harlequin stage costume is sold at auction for 22,500 pounds!
2014, The Beatles movie, "A Hard Days Night," celebrates it's 50th anniversary with a theatrical re-release in America!
