Just a good horned owl for now 🫶

This photo took me about 8 months to get.

This young owl isn’t even close to 8 months old though... So how did it take that long?

Well back in November 2023, I finally found a Great Horned Owl in an area I’d been searching since 2022. I was SO excited. I’d been hoping to photograph baby owls in the spring, so I went back every few weeks to check on the area, hoping the adult had a friend. 🤞

Then around April 10th, I got lucky. I saw a very grumpy Kestrel dive-bombing a tree and spotted an owl sitting next to a wacky looking cavity. And inside the cavity?... Babies! 🥹

The cavity was super high up, so I kept my distance and just watched. I saw mom and dad hunt and feed four fluffy little owlets. 🥹 I watched them leave the nest. I saw one take a very intense tumble after that... but luckily, it was okay. 🫶 Over the next few weeks, I watched them grow, start flying, and hunting on their own.

From the start, I hoped I’d eventually get a photo of one of them from a better angle... and on June 10th, it finally happened. I spotted this one in a tree a little ways from the nest, exploring with its siblings. This moment was worth every second of the wait.

Watching birds and learning their habits and behaviors is something I’ll never get tired of. Getting a photo every now and then is just a bonus. 🫶
