I want to share a except from a book Lori Kristina Burke and I are working on.
Psalms 9:1 "I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works."
Can you sense the admiration and urgency that David sings to God?
The Christian can learn much from this one verse. David writes, “I will," and he leaves no room for hesitation on his part. He has resolved to praise Jehovah no matter what or when, who or how.
He also puts all of himself on display by saying “with my whole heart." It has been said that we use only 10% of our brains, imagine how much of our hearts we use daily in praising God. Can you, as David, say with you whole heart you will praise God today?
This excludes all emotional baggage, all personal attachments, and all physical impairments. With your whole heart, will you praise God? This is a big investment, but it is one that will produce dividends that cannot be accounted for in human terms.
David goes a step further by saying that he would show the “marvelous works” of God. Can we agree that this is a testimony of David's own life? Perhaps David often tells how, while tending sheep, God delivered him from a bear and a lion. Is it possible that David remembers and tells of the day that he, with arms full of provisions, runs to the encampment of Israel’s army and hears the shout of the Philistine giant? Can you imagine how he recounts the battle that ensued as God guided the stone from his sling into the giant's head?
I wonder if, with sadness, David testifies in quiet tones about his sin with Bathsheba and his murderous acts. Did David, with bitter tears, tell about his son dying because of his sin? I imagine David straightening himself and wiping the tears away with a smile as he tells of the goodness of God in the battles that filled his life.
May I ask you today, will you show the friend and foe about the love of God shown to you? Will you tell of the ups and downs, the rivers and valleys, the fires and floods? Will you tell about the hand of God leading you each step of the way?
