Saying good-bye is NEVER easy...As many know by now, our very own Thurston Clary passed away on Sunday March 9th. He had been in the hospital since Monday March 3rd. He had open heart surgery some 4-years ago and quite honestly, he had battles with health issues ever since but he had always bounced back. Unfortunately things didn't bounce his way this time. Thurston was a valuable employee of WISK/WDEC for over 40-years mainly as your morning DJ on 98.7. His stories, misreading the weather and then starting all over again with it, telling you what we had for breakfast by going to the "hen house", playing a song for a birthday or the loss of a loved one--that was what he did. From never telling anyone "NO" to buying Girl Scout cookies when he didn't have to, that too was all him. So while we start a new chapter in our radio family, we too will miss him just as many have already reached and expressed that to us. James Thurston Clary, 65, will have a funeral service Saturday March 15th at 11am at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery. Condolences to his wife Gail and son Jason-we share in your loss.

To use a line from the NCIS episode where Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard was remembered when the actor David McCallum, "Ducky" passed away--they say when you die, you die twice. Once when your body is gone and the second when your stories stop being told. Thurston will always be alive if you keep telling his stories. With that, we say good-bye...

THURSDAY 1/23/25 UPDATE: The State of Emergency curfew has ended for vehicles and driving. Be aware that there ARE still icy spots and some areas will refreeze tonight from the still melting snow. The low tonight will be in the lower 20s. At this morning's Emergency Management meeting, schools has not made a decision about school Friday. One would think that with so many busses on the road so early in the mornings that schools like those in the Sumter County School system would have a delayed opening because of the icy potential so bus riders would be safer. Some of these "snow days" will have to be made up somehow for all schools eventually. More updates when they become available.

01/22/2025

Wednesday 1/22/25 2pm UPDATES: The State of Emergency curfew has been extended to 1pm Thursday. This will be in effect 9pm tonight until 1pm Thursday 1/23. The snow that is now melting will refreeze tonight and create hazardous driving conditions, probably worse than we experienced this morning. All schools in Sumter County will be closed again on Thursday including SGTC. GSW will again be virtual Thursday.

The warming station at Calvary Episcopal Church at 408 S. Lee Street is operational through breakfast on Thursday. At noon, First Baptist Church will serve lunch at noon and will be the designated warming station through breakfast Saturday morning 1/25. The offices of the City of Americus, Sumter County Courthouse and LEC will be closed on Thursday. The scheduled Americus City Council meeting Thursday night has been postponed until Thursday 1/30/25 at 6pm in Council Chambers of the Public Safety Building downtown. Another Emergency Management meeting will be held Thursday morning to determine about Friday's activities.

The weather forecast: partly cloudy but VERY COLD tonight with a low of 14. Mostly cloudy Thursday with highs only around 40. Partly-mostly cloudy Thursday night with a low of 22. Friday's high may reach the mid-40s but under partly-mostly cloudy skies again. Friday night will be clearing and cold with lows near 20. We will finally be above the freezing mark at night Sunday when it's supposed to be 38. Once again the bottom line is stay at home and avoid being on the streets and highways. Further updates will be made when necessary.

01/22/2025

BREAKING NEWS...ALL of Sumter County is under a STATE of EMERGENCY and a curfew is in effect for all non-essential personnel until 1pm today (1/22). Americus and Sumter County has received OVER 6 inches of snow that prompted this STATE of EMERGENCY.

01/21/2025

3pm UPDATES for 1-21-25: Warming stations are now operational at Calvary Episcopal Church (as of 4pm) at 408 S. Lee Street through breakfast Thursday (1/23). At noon Thursday, First Baptist Church at 221 S. Lee Street will then serve lunch and will be a warming station through breakfast Saturday morning 1/25.

City of Americus Offices, the Sumter County Courthouse and LEC (Law Enforcement Center) will be closed Wednesday and all are scheduled to open Thursday with normal business hours. Waste Management will be suspending trash collection for the City of Americus Wednesday. Services will resume as soon as conditions allow for safe operations for all employees. Waste Management will catch up all missed Wednesday collections as quickly as possible.

Due to Gov. Kemp declaring most of SW Georgia as emergency areas due to snow and ice, some cities and counties have declared curfews for tonight. Schley County has declared a curfew from 8pm tonight until 8am Wednesday. Sumter County Sher. Eric Bryant stated that he thinks a curfew is not necessary for Sumter County because 1) Citizens have heeded the warnings and are staying off the streets and highways, 2) Public works has prepared for snow and ice with GDOT, and 3) the Sheriff would like to thank the citizens for following all the advice of staying at home if at all possible.

IF you do have to be out, slow down. Remember that any snow will still be on the ground Wednesday morning because the lows tonight will drop into the teens (16) so be aware of BLACK ICE Wednesday morning and night and again Thursday morning. We will not be above freezing at night until Sunday as of today (1/21).
