ENUGU AIR TAKES FLIGHT: A NEW CHAPTER IN SOUTHEAST AVIATION INDUSTRY
EVANG. RICHARD
Enugu State, under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, proudly becomes the first State in Nigeria’s Southeast to establish its own airline - and the second nationwide, after Akwa Ibom’s Ibom Air. This achievement marks a seismic shift in regional connectivity, economic growth, and infrastructure development.
FROM VISION TO REALITY
Announced in late 2023, the State committed over ₦41 billion for four aircraft in the 2025 budget - more than half of which have already landed at Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
On July 7, 2025 this day, Enugu Air officially launched with three Embraer jets (E170/E190), forging a strategic “golden triangle” linking Enugu with Abuja and Lagos - and soon extending to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano.
WHY IT MATTERS
Strategic regional linkage:
Historically underserved by direct national flights, the Southeast gains a reliable aviation hub - facilitating trade, tourism, and access for the Igbo diaspora.
Economic ripple effects:
Enugu Air generates thousands of jobs - from pilots and cabin crew to ground staff and engineers - while energizing airport infrastructure, hospitality, and logistics.
Boost to state identity:
This bold move cements Enugu’s rise as a regional leader, echoing Governor Mbah’s broader development agenda: smart cities, CNG and electric buses, green schools and health centres.
GOVERNOR MBAH'S BROADER VISION
Since taking office in May 2023, Governor Mbah has prioritized infrastructure, education, and economic transformation:
Launched CNG bus fleets and modern transit terminals across Enugu Metropolis.
Revitalized the Oranto Airport Hotel to support airport expansion and anticipated tourism growth.
Injected investment into agribusiness deals, industrial startups, and smart public services - collectively raising Internally Generated Revenue from ₦37 billion in 2023 to over ₦144 billion by late 2024.
IBOM AIR: PRECEDENT & PROMISE
Akwa Ibom’s Ibom Air, established in June 2019, has flown such routes for years and earned industry accolades (e.g. IOSA certification, domestic codeshare). Enugu follows in its path - signalling that states can champion their own aviation ecosystems.
LOOKING AHEAD
Enugu Air’s success will hinge on:
Route performance and affordable fares.
Integration with existing national carriers like Dana Air, which Ibom Air codeshares with.
Expansion of cargo logistics, linking regional production to global markets via revamped airport facilities.
Governor Mbah’s vision was no mere political pitch - it was a strategic roadmap built on investment, infrastructure, and a long-term plan for elevating Enugu’s economic landscape.
Enugu Air isn’t just a state-owned airline - it’s a symbol: of regional empowerment, of innovative governance, and of a Southeast ready to shoulder its place in Nigeria’s prosperity future.
