Howdy everyone! We know many of our readers like to spin a good yarn! Just a friendly reminder – we are accepting entries for the 19th annual holiday writing contest. We start the story...and you finish it in 300 words or less. Our editors will carefully study all the entries and print the best ones in the February/March 2026 issue.

The entry deadline is Friday, December 12, 2025, so click on the link below to view the rules and read the beginning of this year’s Christmas story!

This information will also be on page 21 of your December/January 2026 Holiday issue when it arrives at your home!

We know many of our readers like to spin a good yarn—maybe not professionally, but just for the fun of expressing themselves. Or perhaps you enjoy writing down family memories for your kids or grandkids to cherish for years to come.

Good morning! Editor Larry, here! Thank you for checking back in on Our Iowa's page! We apologize for being away this past summer due to some technical issues, staffing realignments and while we've been at work redesigning our Web page (look for the "new look" of our Web site to be completed sometime later this fall.) But in the meantime, we're ready to begin showcasing your Facebook photos and conversations again. Our Iowa Magazine has nearly 90,000 extremely loyal subscribers, and we thank each one of you for coming to our "kitchen table" for "neighborly visits"!! Let's make this a great autumn day!

A new twist in the story!

In our April/May issue, we published Shawna Marin’s “Treasure in the Turkey River” story about the message in a bottle she and her husband found during a kayak excursion. Turns out it was actually Patricia’s family that Shawna eventually connected with—Lois’ family she was unable to find. The story has that backward.

In a fun development, one of our readers saw the story and gave it to her friends Sharon Harris and Rebecca Brendel—who just happen to be Lois’ daughters! They were eager to recount the tale…to their mom—who is still living at 98 years old! Shawna, the story’s author, is eager to talk to the family, too. Perhaps Lois will finally get the pen pal her 15-year-old self was hoping for when she and her friend Patricia tossed their message in a bottle into the Turkey River.
