Celebrating our 21st Anniversary!
On this our 21st anniversary, we want to borrow the words of the great Spanish poet Antonio Machado: “Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar” (Traveler, there is no road; you make your own path as you walk). With these words, I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who, year after year, has given us their support along this “camino.”
In November 2004, the first edition of El Sol Latino was printed at the now-defunct Star Press in Holyoke. Few people believed that this Puerto Rican/Latinx-owned newspaper would survive for more than a few years. Many other Latinx-owned newspapers in Western Massachusetts had struggled to last, with none surpassing the 10-year mark.
Twenty-one years later, we continue to focus on being a unique kind of newspaper. We remain a local bilingual community outlet and a Puerto Rican/Latinx-owned publication. Our commitment continues to be to serve as an alternative voice dedicated to developing and promoting independent, diverse, and inclusive journalism that champions social justice.
