Looking across Padilla Bay from March's Point, the tranquil, glass-like surface of the water perfectly mirrors the towering, snow-covered summit of Mount Baker in the distance. The stillness of the bay brings a calming effect, with a solitary bird in flight adding a sense of quiet movement to this peaceful Northwest landscape. This black-and-white image captures the serene beauty and majesty of Skagit County, Washington.

Captured at midday on November 25, 2023, this dramatic black and white image highlights the snow-clad summit of Mount Baker, with the bold contrasts and tones inspired by Ansel Adams’ iconic work. The interplay of light from the west emphasizes the rugged textures of the mountain while the silhouetted trees evoke a timeless Pacific Northwest wilderness. Photograph by Ernie Hayden of Rising Moon NW Photography, reflecting a passion for classic monochrome landscape photography and deep appreciation for nature’s majesty.

Captured on a frigid December 18, 2016 morning in the Snoqualmie Valley near the town of Snoqualmie, Washington, this black and white photograph reveals the stark beauty of winter. The sun, barely breaking through heavy clouds, casts a striking reflection across the frozen surface of the pond. The leafless trees, silhouetted against the sky, contribute to a serene yet dramatic scene that encapsulates the quiet cold of a Pacific Northwest winter morning.

In this striking black and white image, the dormant volcano Mt Baker rises majestically from the North Cascades of Washington State. A massive lenticular cloud wraps around the snow-capped summit, creating an almost otherworldly scene. Lenticular clouds form when stable, moist air flows over a mountain or range of mountains, creating a series of standing waves in the atmosphere. When the temperature at the crest of these waves drops to the dew point, moisture condenses into these distinctive, lens-shaped clouds. Often mistaken for UFOs due to their smooth, saucer-like appearance, lenticular clouds are a clear sign of turbulent air — a beautiful and dynamic phenomenon perfectly showcased here.

On August 22, 2025, an Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) perches majestically atop a weathered piling in Fidalgo Bay near Anacortes, Washington. Captured in the early morning light, this image highlights the osprey’s striking plumage and keen presence as it surveys the waters for fish. Fidalgo Bay’s natural beauty and rich wildlife provide an inspiring backdrop for bird and landscape photography, making moments like these a true treasure for enthusiasts. In the tranquil moments before sunrise, a fishing boat quietly departs Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes, Washington. The dawn light gently illuminates the water, while the cliffs of Cap Sante stand watch on the left. In the distance, the soft silhouettes of the North Cascade mountains frame the horizon, painting a serene Pacific Northwest landscape. Photo by Ernie Hayden, Rising Moon NW Photography.

A striking Black Oystercatcher strolls along the shores of March's Point at Padilla Bay, clutching a piece of seaweed in its vibrant orange-red beak. The bird's glossy black plumage and piercing eye stand out against the gentle blue waters, while its elegant reflection shimmers on the water's surface. This unique moment showcases the natural beauty and behaviors of coastal wildlife found throughout the Pacific Northwest.

On Saturday, August 9th, the full Sturgeon Moon graced the evening sky. To capture this celestial event, I set up my camera and tripod near the Swinomish Channel, facing east. My intention was to frame the moonrise through the powerful steel girders of the BNSF Railroad Swing Bridge. This photograph features the vibrant golden disc of the Sturgeon Moon beautifully rising behind the iconic bridge structure, creating a juxtaposition of nature and industry unique to Anacortes, Washington.

On Saturday, August 9th, the Sturgeon Moon illuminated the night sky as it rose above the Swinomish Channel. I positioned my camera and tripod to face east, intending to frame the moon rising through the girders of the BNSF Railroad Swing Bridge. This image is a close-up taken with my Sony 200-600mm lens and a 1.4x extender, capturing the subtle surface details and warm amber hues of the August full moon. The scene unfolded near Anacortes, Washington, a perfect vantage point for observing this annual summer phenomenon.
