HAPPY NATIONAL WILDLIFE DAY!

Today is a day to celebrate the wonderful wildlife in nature. I enjoy viewing and photographing American Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, River Otters, and other magnificent that surround us. Please take time to contribute money and time to such organizations as National Wildlife Federation and others to ensure our grandchildren will enjoy these magnificent creatures.

Every summer, the fuchsia in my Anacortes backyard puts on a show, and this bloom was too good to pass up. I shot it with my Sony a7IV and the FE 70-200mm f4 Macro G OSS II lens, using in camera focus stacking so every ruffled layer stays sharp, from the deep red sepals down to the long, trailing stamens. The afternoon sun was doing all the work that day, catching the petals in warm, soft light and turning the purple and red into something almost jewel toned.

This is the kind of shot that reminds me why macro work is my favorite part of the craft. You get close enough to see the details most people walk right past. Fuchsia like this grows all over the Pacific Northwest, but there is something special about photographing one from my own yard here in Skagit County.

Late afternoon light was pouring over Rosario Strait when I found this guy sprawled across a buoy west of Fidalgo Island, completely unbothered by the boat traffic or the cormorants roosting above him. He had clearly claimed the whole thing as his own.

Late afternoon light on the Salish Sea, and this tufted puffin was hard at work, diving for fish to bring home to its chicks. We caught this moment on a wildlife cruise with the Sea School of Anacortes, out near Smith Island west of Whidbey.

I'm pleased to announce the sale of one of my photographs in the form of a jigsaw puzzle! This is very exciting news.

This is a photograph of the Sturgeon Moonrise over the Swinomish Channel last year and someone thinks so much of it that they want a puzzle of it. Wow that is super exciting.
