After discovering his passion for filmmaking at the age of 12, Roland Cañamar proceeded to dive head first into the craft. While in Jr High and High School, he creating both documentaries and narrative short films on super 8mm he was recognized by many as a prolific filmmaker with a promising future. Armed with a thirst for storytelling and the praises of his mentor and peers, he decided that film production would be his career, as well as his passion.

1983 saw his first win for Best Drama, Best in Show at the Orange County Fair Film Festival, film titled "Dreamer", Best Cinematographer in the Cal State Northridge Film Festival 1985, film titled "Seduction", Roland was on the right track. Fresh from college, Roland worked for two years as main cameraman at a Southern California television station network which broadcast worldwide. At 25, while still working at the television network (TBN) he started his first company, The Mini Mini Grip & Lighting which supplied equipment for short films, commercials and corporate videos. Soon thereafter, Roland began shooting as a cinematographer, director and producer on corporate videos, commercials and films which quickly grew his company and enabled him to form Cañamar Motion Pictures. Adapting to local trends, Cañamar Motion Pictures relocated from Santa Ana to Laguna Niguel, California to better serve the growing corporate video market that was supported by the booming business economy. This location soon evolved into a full service motion picture film production facility with lighting packages, cameras, stages and standing sets. Business continued at a steady pace and by February 2001, Silver Dream Factory was born. Silver Dream Factory is now located in Anaheim serving Indie Features and is situated within the 30 Mile Zone.

The backlot turned into controlled chaos. A pickup truck slammed into an SUV in a full-scale crash sequence staged for camera — all under the glow of a massive night setup.

The crew brought serious firepower to this shoot: multiple cameras rolling simultaneously, a 45’ crane capturing sweeping cinematic movement, and a Star Light creating that perfect “moonlight” base fill across the entire scene. The result? Big-screen scale, depth, and atmosphere right here on the backlot.

From precision stunt coordination to cinematic lighting design, this was one of those nights where every department came together to make movie magic happen.

Night shoots hit different. 🌙🎥🚔💥

An emotional moment captured on the apartment backlot set.

Using warm amber practicals against the textured brick facade, the crew created a grounded cinematic look that feels intimate, vulnerable, and real. The color palette played a huge role in the scene — soft warm tones wrapping the character while subtle shadows added emotional weight and isolation.

What makes this apartment set so effective is the realism and depth. The stoops, windows, brick textures, and motivated lighting all gave the camera natural layers to work with, allowing the performance to breathe without feeling staged.

This is the kind of environment where emotion translates directly through the lens.

Another incredible night on the SDF Studios Backlot.

We kicked things off with the fundamentals of grip work—understanding how to control light rather than just throw it around.

Grips shape light by blocking, reflecting, softening, and tinting—every choice affects the final image.

We focused heavily on the C-stand:

Proper placement and setup
The “KISS” principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) and don't over complicate the stand setup, keep it close and as tight as you can the main stand structure
Load-to-weight ratios
Correct sandbag placement(very important)
And just as important—how NOT to rig a C-stand

We also broke down light control techniques:

Blocking (shading) light effectively
How distance between the light and subject impacts shadow quality—sharp vs. soft

And above all, we emphasized what separates pros from amateurs:
Safety. Every setup, every rig, every decision starts there.

More to come.

Sometimes filmmaking isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment… it’s about creating it. 🎬
This crew needed a seamless match to a later nighttime exterior just outside the diner—but instead of burning hours waiting for the sun to go down, they brought the night inside the Diner.
With smart lighting, controlled exposure, and a little movie magic, they transformed the diner into a convincing nighttime scene—right in the middle of the day. 🌙✨
That’s the beauty of shooting on a controlled stage/Backlot:
No waiting. No chasing daylight. Just pure creative control.
At SDF Studios, day or night… it’s always your call.
