Salesperson - Juneau

This is a sales position, fulfilling wholesale orders of books, calendars, maps, puzzles, board games and other printed materials in and around Juneau and Southeast Alaska. The salesperson will be assigned many existing accounts as well as developing new accounts. Compensation is directly linked to the amount of effort you put in, with great potential to grow your sales and earnings.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Todd Communications is a 13-person publishing and wholesale book distribution company that has been growing consistently for 45 years. The company specializes in books and other print media about Alaska, including history, hunting, fishing, cookbooks, children’s books, Native lore, wildlife and biographies. The company is the exclusive wholesale distributor of the Milepost.

The salesperson’s role is to support and lead in the sales efforts of books and other print materials Todd Communications warehouses and sells. Sales in this area have excellent potential for growth.

Most of the salesperson’s time will be spent selling products published by Todd Communications and more than 100 other publishers. A Todd Communications catalog showing the products sold by Todd Communications is available to give to customers.

Todd Communications has about 600 wholesale accounts located in Alaska. Customers include warehouse stores such as Costco, large retail stores such as Walmart and Barnes & Noble, as well as small gift shops. Todd Communications has full-time salespeople and warehouses in Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks. The Juneau salesperson handles sales in Southeast Alaska in Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Haines, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Craig and Coffman Cove.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

The salesperson will be actively involved in selling to new and established customers. The salesperson will be given established accounts to take orders from and show new product to. The salesperson will be expected to build new accounts by calling on the phone, emailing and visiting in person.

A significant portion of the Juneau-based salesperson’s time should be spent out of the office visiting customers. Much of the time out of the office should be spent visiting potential customers.

The Juneau based salesperson is assigned Southeastern Alaska accounts in Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Haines, Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Petersburg. It is important to the company that we not only maintain the level of service we have been offering but improve it as much as possible. This will also require ferry travel for you and your vehicle. You are responsible for the cost of your personal passage on these trips. You are also responsible for half the cost of your vehicle on these trips. The company will reimburse half the cost of the vehicle as long as receipts from each round trip to and from Juneau to Sitka / Haines and Skagway and Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Petersburg) are sent to us in Anchorage within two weeks of those trips. These trips are a real incentive to customers as they save the normal freight costs they would incur. There are two round trip circuits you are expected to make between April and early August to Sitka, Skagway, Haines, and one round trip expected to Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Petersburg.

The salesperson is expected to work from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday each week in the spring and summer and about four hours each day in the fall and winter.

Todd Communications has a PC network. You will be assigned a computer and will have full and immediate access to all invoices written in the company, sales and collections comments and product information.

Training will be given to help the salesperson learn how to use the computer system to maximize their productivity. All salespeople are required to enter all sales contacts and customer comments on their computer. The salesperson is also responsible for fulfilling all of his or her sales and making collections on his or her own accounts when they become past due.

COMPENSATION

Salespeople at Todd Communications must be willing to make a minimum commitment to the company of one year. After three months full time salespeople will become eligible for the company group medical program. After the end of one full year of employment, the salesperson will be eligible to take two weeks’ vacation. After two years on the job, the salesperson will be eligible to take three weeks’ vacation, except during our busiest months of April to October. Paid sick time begins to accrue immediately upon date of hire at the rate of one hour per week.

The salesperson will be paid commissions on revenues of product sales. Most products pay 10% commission but there are some that pay more and some less. Product commissions are all listed in our database. You will be paid twice a month on the 6th and 21st of each month.

Other duties include but are not limited to receiving, stockroom work and inventory. Any other expenses Todd Communications is responsible for must have management approval in writing prior to purchase. The salesperson is not to incur any expenses on behalf of Todd Communications including rent, storage, labor or any other expenses without management approval in writing prior to incurring the expense.

Salespeople are hired under a 90-day probationary period during which Todd Communications management will review your performance.

The company is the exclusive wholesale distributor of the Milepost. Income is generated at Todd Communications in four major ways:

1. Wholesale sales of books, calendars, notecards, puzzles and other published products to stores throughout Alaska.
2. Alaska Directory of Attorneys – advertising, listings, and circulation, as well as e-mail lists and mailing labels of bar members.
3. International print brokering, consulting and production of custom printed materials.
4. Retail sales of products primarily through the mail on our website and Amazon.

Wholesale sales are critical to the performance and growth of the company. The salesperson’s role is to support and lead in the sales efforts of books and other print materials. Todd Communications warehouses and sells other publishers’ books as well as nearly 100 of its own. Sales in this area have excellent potential for growth. The salesperson should expect his or her role at Todd Communications to grow and develop over time.

Most of the salesperson’s time will be spent selling products published by Todd Communications and other publishers. A Todd Communications catalog showing the 2,500+ products sold by Todd Communications is available to give to customers.

Customers for Todd Communications’ products are diverse and are located throughout Alaska, Canada, the Lower 48 states and many countries throughout the world. Todd Communications has about 600 existing wholesale accounts, most of them located within Alaska. Customers include warehouse stores such as Costco, large retail stores such as Walmart and Barnes & Noble, as well as small gift shops along the highways in the more remote areas of Alaska including Skagway, Petersburg, Sitka, Dutch Harbor, Kodiak and Nome. Todd Communications has full-time salespeople and warehouses in Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks. The Juneau salesperson handles sales in Southeast Alaska, while the Fairbanks salesperson handles sales in Fairbanks and Interior Alaska.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

A significant portion of the salesperson’s time should be spent out of the office visiting established customers to see if they require more products, merchandising and displaying those products and introducing them to products they have not carried in the past. Much of the time out of the office should be spent visiting new customers and businesses that do not currently purchase our products. Numerous times during the year, especially in the summer, the salesperson may be expected to take road trips, sometimes overnight, to communities outside Anchorage at times chosen by management so those communities and businesses along the road system can be covered in a timely fashion. The salesperson will be responsible for any expenses incurred during a road trip. These expenses are not reimbursable. Being familiar with stores that can carry Todd Communications’ products is essential and can only be learned if time is spent visiting businesses and staying observant on the road, as well as traveling throughout Anchorage. The normal sales commission of ten percent is liberal enough that it will cover travel expenses.

Todd Communications has a PC computer system and a custom-built database for our products. Each Anchorage-based salesperson will be assigned a computer. Training will be given to help the salesperson learn how to use the computer system/database to maximize their productivity. Salespeople are also responsible for delivering their sales.

You'll also be responsible for receiving inventory into the warehouse in order to pack up your sales and deliver them. This position is commissioned, and comes with a region full of long-term clients already available to get you started, as well as plenty of potential available to add more clients in.

WHAT WE'RE NOT LOOKING FOR: You don’t need any degree for this job. A HS Diploma/GED is good enough for education.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Someone who can learn on the job, is computer savvy, and can communicate accurately over email and the phone. As an accounting position, we’ll need you to be accurate and timely in your work. Because you’ll be working with clients, you’ll need to have a friendly demeanor over email and phones. COMPUTER QUALIFICATIONS: You’ll need to know how to use Windows, and we’d prefer if you understood at least the basics of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word). Experience in QuickBooks is a plus, but the right applicant who demonstrates the ability to learn will be our highest preference.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING: We need someone to send out statements regularly to clients. You’ll need to email and call and sometimes track people down. You’ll need to keep accurate records of your conversations with people and be able to update our sales and management team about where clients are at. If a client is being difficult, you’ll move that person up the chain and let management handle them, so no need to worry about that. You’ll need to be able to read an invoice and accurately add up charges, and work with clients to get credit card information or checks setup for bank deposits.

THE PAY: Current pay scale for this position is between 20/hr. and 22/hr., depending on experience and qualifications.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING: We need someone who can carefully keep track of our inventory to make sure the database is accurate at all times, and our product is stocked and ready to go for our Sales team. We have two satellite warehouses, one in Juneau and Fairbanks, so you’ll need to be able to monitor their numbers as well and work with the sales team regularly to anticipate what they’re going to need ahead of time. You’ll also be working with other publishers to build contracts with them that give us a wider margin on our product. You’ll go over invoices and turn in credit requests for damaged or missing goods, and just generally, Manage the Inventory.

THE PAY: Current pay scale for this position is between 40,000 and 45,000 a year, salaried, depending on experience.

Staff Accountant Bookkeeper at Todd Communications is a full time 8-5 Monday through Friday job at 611 E. 12th Ave. in Anchorage, Alaska. The job entails supporting the Controller on all accounting matters related to the company's operations including, but not limited to daily journal entries, preparing bank deposits, accounts payable, receivables, collections and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Quickbooks, Excel, ACCESS. Ability to work quickly and efficiently to pay bills before due, assist with collections, as well as reports on rental income, cashflow.
Duties may include paying the company president's bills and preparation of documentation to be sent to the company's CPAs for filing of personal income taxes, as well as the company's Subchapter S filing.
Salary is $40,000-$42,000 per year DOE. Salary may be more or less DOE. Benefits include national holidays, two weeks paid vacation after one year and three weeks' paid vacation after three years. Todd Communications, an Anchorage-based book publisher, print broker and wholesale book distributor, is seeking a full-time office manager/associate editor to manage our front office and assist with editorial duties.

Office manager duties include:

Accommodating walk-in customers, vendors, delivery people
Answering telephone calls
Completing retail orders via our Microsoft Access data base
Receiving and distributing mail
Mailing retail book and calendar orders
Assisting with quarterly inventory counts

Editorial duties may include:

Proofreading print and digital materials
Writing product descriptions for our website and Amazon listings
Assigning ISBNs, UPCs & PCNs to books
Applying for copyright registration with the Library of Congress
Writing copy for our company’s calendars
Maintaining the company library
Updating company website with new products
Assisting in editing and performing research for the Alaska Directory of Attorneys, a twice-yearly publication.

Position requirements:

Three years of office experience (print/copy/fax, general computing skills)
Microsoft Office suite experience (Word, Excel, Outlook)
