Here we are at the start of another summer music season. In May each year we have forgotten the exhaustion we felt in October and the months before us feel full of possibility.

Who are you looking forward to seeing most this year?

No matter who it is, if they’re from the local scene, you cannot go wrong.

You should put Raised By Elephants on your list along with all their other projects, too.

See you soon, friends.

When we left Humpy’s on January 16 after enjoying Chill Factor, we turned to one another and said, “dang, Regina MacDonald sounded good tonight!”

She sounds good every night, but you can tell when a vocalist has been working especially hard at their instrument, and you can also tell when a collection of skilled musicians has come together in a way that pushes one another and finds joy performing together in equal measure; the entire band sounded just as good.

Chill Factor is an Alaskan rock and roll band with longevity: they have been playing stages in Alaska for at least a decade. They are known for headlining benefit concerts on behalf of organizations such as The Covenant House and for playing lively parties at venues such as Palmer Alehouse, Alaska’s State Fair and, of course, Humpy’s.

In addition to their work together, most if not all of these musicians have other projects, so you have to follow them on socials to keep track of where they’ll pop up together or in other bands. They’re available to book for parties, too, so if you need a band at your event, you should give them a call.

We so enjoy Chill Factor and we hope you have the opportunity to experience the fun they bring to a stage near you very soon!

If you think you’ve seen all that Farrago Five has to offer then you will have grossly underestimated them; even in bad weather, this local band filled our social hall on a Friday night.

This band is our definition of a triple threat: raw talent, willingness to market themselves, and supportive fans who show up for them no matter where they play! Plus, they’re multi-instrumentalists, they believe in their product, and they play everything with high energy, especially their original work.

I guess that makes them a sextuple threat?

Anyway.

If you missed them at Williwaw on 01/16 then we forgive you because really the weather was atrocious but we also feel sorry for you because their performance was off the chain.

Follow these up and comers at and plan to be on the rail at center stage during their next show. We have a feeling this was the start of something special and that you’ll see them on more stages near you very soon.

Raised by Elephants should almost be classified as the ultimate Alaskan super group. Each musician who plays with them is skilled, storied, and even legendary in their own right. It is the kind of roster that makes you wonder how the band’s leader, Ben Heller, got all these people on the same stage, working on the same project. We think we know the answer: they have common goals, they each work as hard as the other at their craft, and they have a deep, abiding sense of reverence and respect for one another.

Raised by Elephants has a sound that transports you to another world while you listen. Their music is a perspective and an experience that is singular. They grow in their power each time we see them and we are so excited for what is to come in the new year.

Please follow this band and, if you have no plans, please plan to attend their show at Silver Fox Inn on Friday 01/16 in the Matanuska Valley. Even if you do have plans, cancel them, and go to their show instead. Meanwhile, enjoy their music on all your favorite streaming platforms, and close your eyes while you listen.

“All I know how to do is love,” said Hope Social Club’s lead singer, Melissa Mitchell, to a packed house at Humpy’s on a Friday night in January.

This show was everything you would expect from this iconic Alaskan band - brilliant musical talent, tons of dancing, and the kind of vibe that makes you want to hug people you don’t even know, but it was also themed with a call to action: stand up, make a difference, and use your voice for good.

Hope Social Club is already packing their schedule in the new year. You should follow them for updates and never miss a show at a bar near you.

It’s that time of year where cabin fever takes on a distinct shape, namely that of summer music season in Alaska where the nights are long, the daylight lasts forever, and the music is special in a way that words cannot describe.

We love it for the manner in which musicians from various groups come together to explore new sounds and growing friendships with the sort of joy that is infectious, the kind the crowd can feel as well.

Black Barrel and the Bad Men will be playing at one of the first weekends in Hope at Creekbend and Silvertooth from Good Company will be tickling keys and crooning on stages near you sooner than you know.

It is cold, it is dark, and more snow is coming soon. But better days are just around the corner and we will see you dancing in front of your favorite stage very soon.

We have an endless amount of respect for musicians like Garrett; he keeps working at his craft to the point that his technical progress is unmistakable, he leads with a powerful message and he stands for something, and regardless of what it costs him he chooses music, and that choice doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else because it is worthwhile to him.

The way he approaches singing and playing is the sort of thing that makes you wish you’d never put the instrument down, or stepped away from the microphone. ✨

You never know where Garrett is going to pop up with his guitar, so you better follow so you know the next time he does. Better yet, follow him for updates about his new project that is just about ready to launch; it is an experience you will not want to miss!
