“It didn’t take long after working at the Sitka retail store and working with our customers and my colleagues to know that this was the right fit for me.

As a customer sales representative, the local people we work with are simply the best. Whether they bring in coffee and donuts as a thank you, or I get to help them solve an issue that’s been bugging them, to receive that gratitude from them is amazing. And sometimes, I really need that! The most rewarding part is seeing the appreciation I get from not only our customers but from our company too. My leadership sees the work I do and they give praise and show appreciation — I don't think I've ever had a job that truly did that before.

Last year, I had the opportunity to travel to Utqiagvik to work at their retail store for a week. It was a really unique experience. I immediately felt welcomed there. Just being able to experience another village was amazing. Being Tlingit myself, it was eye opening to see Arctic Alaska and experience another Alaska Native culture. That’s something I probably would never have experienced if I wasn’t in this role!”

Athina is coming up on her three year anniversary with GCI! When Athina isn’t at the Sitka retail store, she’s spending time out and about in Sitka, enjoying the many hiking trails or having movies nights at home with her dog. “My name is Celeste Matlock (Ciqilaralria). I was named after my paternal grandmother, and I was raised in Hooper Bay. Growing up, I lived a subsistence lifestyle off the land and the sea. I spent many winters with my grandmother, and we would create kuspuks, baskets, and earrings together.

When I started at GCI, my coworkers took me under their wings. I was the youngest on the team and they welcomed me into a nurturing and supportive environment. Their guidance and encouragement transformed me into the person I am today.
When GCI brought cell service to Hooper Bay, it was amazing, and I felt way more connected to my family there. I was so happy to be able to contact them from my phone, just one FaceTime call away. I don't feel like I'm missing out on gatherings because I’m able to FaceTime for birthdays and events, and when I need my mom, she's right there.

My connection to my Yupik heritage is not just personal, it's something I use to serve my community. While working at GCI, I often find myself acting as a bridge between the company and Yupik speaking elders. I can't speak it completely, but I can understand it because I grew up around it. I am able to connect with people from my region and help them translate when they need it.

I've stayed with GCI over the years because of my coworkers, the excellent benefits and competitive pay. I would like to emphasize that I worked hard to get here despite going through a lot in my life, like homelessness in the beginning of my career. The hardships I endured did not define me, instead with determination, resilience, and commitment, I was able to succeed.”

Celeste is a Revenue Account Clerk Lead and has worked at GCI for over 15 years. In her spare time, Celeste enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, participating in community events and being an active member of GCI's team, where she helps create a positive and engaging work environment for her colleagues.

“When I transitioned to GCI in 2022, I found that my background in the hospitality industry was invaluable. My journey took me through 10 years in various restaurants in Anchorage and even as a deckhand in Prince William Sound. This eclectic path has shaped my perspective on customer service, which I bring into my role as a Sourcing Manager.

I often liken my work to running a restaurant. Each project we handle is like a table, and in hospitality, we strive to meet the specific needs of our guests. My experiences taught me the importance of listening and understanding varied perspectives. In the restaurant world, it’s about finding mutual understanding between the tables, servers and kitchen — much like I do now as part of the sourcing team. My role allows me to channel that passion for customer service and my degree in business to support internal teams throughout the organization.

Reflecting on my time at GCI, a lot of the projects I’ve worked on required collaboration across many teams. I often compare successful projects to a well-served meal, knowing that it requires attention to detail and teamwork to ensure our stakeholders leave satisfied. Ensuring clarity and precision in our work is what motivates me each day.

I’m fortunate to work with an amazing team that makes me feel seen and heard. We connect personally and professionally, which is vital in our remote environment. Building those relationships is crucial. I believe every day brings new challenges, but together we craft solutions that meet immediate needs while contributing to GCI’s overall success.”

“Last year I did 100 cold plunges in a row at my house and filmed it each day for my social media. What happened next, I would’ve never expected.

I got a message from one of our team managers saying, ‘We need to talk.’ I panicked. What I thought was going to be a sit down about my social media turned into an invitation for a speaking gig with our sales team. I think most people would’ve turned it down because it's uncomfortable or there's not enough time to prepare, whatever your excuse would be, but the whole reason I began cold plunging was to embrace being uncomfortable. That’s exactly what I decided to talk about.

I felt such great reward from speaking and telling people my story, even with short notice. It just worked out the way it was supposed to. In life, you're never going to be fully prepared for anything, but it works out at the end of the day. That’s kind of my M.O.

I don't know what the next few years will bring at GCI, but I do know is there are a lot of opportunities. That’s one of the beauties of GCI. You can find your home somewhere else in the company if you realize you have other interest or talents you want to bring to the table. Leaders at the company are very big on encouraging career development, and the stronger our team is, the more successful we'll be at the end of the day.”

“I’m currently a recruiter within HR here at GCI. I have the privilege of hiring for many departments including Marketing, Accounting, Consumer, and the rural areas of Alaska. I get to help with the recruiting and onboarding process which is super exciting because I get to be a part of that happy moment when someone starts their new career here at GCI.

My favorite part about my job is simple — I love helping people. Last year I had the opportunity to spend time in Bethel. While I was there, I got to connect with the youth to show the kids different career paths GCI has to offer. We handed out GCI swag and talked with them about their passions. It’s been incredibly rewarding.

I was born and raised in Alaska and grew up in a very diverse family. My family is Black, white, Tongan, and now also Haitian. So, being a part of a company that is also diverse makes me feel right at home. I feel like Alaska in general is that same way. It's a culture that's like no other.

Beginning in March, I am transitioning to the Benefits team. A couple of my favorite benefits are our 10% 401k match and our Employee Assistance Program which helps with things like stress, anxiety, and depression to name a few. I'm a go-getter and I always want to accomplish my goals, so the fact that GCI gives me the chance to help others and spread my wings is a dream.”
