When Alaskans face hardship, we come together. In response to Typhoon Halong, GCI employees continue to show up for our neighbors who were displaced by the storm.

To provide hands-on support, GCI opened a temporary site at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage where families reconnect and access essential resources. Our teams have volunteered hundreds of hours sorting and distributing donations to make sure those affected receive what they need, when they need it.

In less than a week, GCI retail stores collected nearly 90 pallets of items generously donated by people across the state. We've also provided generators and phone chargers to help power ongoing recovery work.

We're grateful to be part of a community that continues to show up with compassion and care when it's needed most, and we'll keep working alongside our neighbors as recovery efforts move forward.

“I was born and raised right here in Alaska. After high school I wanted to see something different, so I packed up and moved to Las Vegas for college. I earned my degree in psychology. After a few years, I realized how much I missed home. The people, the pace, and the sense of community that you only find in Alaska. When I came back, my boyfriend at the time (now my husband) suggested I apply at GCI. It was supposed to be a short-term thing. That was nearly 15 years ago. What started as “just a job” turned into a lifelong career.

Now I lead our corporate training team, the folks behind all things products, systems, and employee learning. My team trains new hires at our contact centers and retail locations, supports other departments, and helps design everything from compliance to customer experience training. My background in psychology fits right in because so much of this work is about people, how they learn, what motivates them, and how to help them succeed.

What’s most rewarding to me is watching others grow. I’ve been lucky to have leaders who believed in me, one manager has mentored me for nearly a decade. She’s the reason I’ve grown into a leader, and I’m incredibly grateful for her guidance and support. I try to pay that forward with my own team. I’m also proud of the work we’re doing to revamp our new hire training program. It’s a big project that requires all hands on deck, we’re shifting from a traditional, lecture-style format to a blended learning experience that combines self-paced, interactive modules with hands-on workshops. This new approach is designed to be more engaging, flexible, and better aligned with the day-to-day realities our agents face. It’s exciting to see our impact ripple across the company.

GCI is a company that truly values family, flexibility, and balance. In the past few years, I’ve become a mom to two kids. Being able to work remotely has been a game-changer. I get to lead a team I love and still be there for all the big family moments, I get the best of both worlds. GCI has given me a career, a community, and the ability to grow alongside my family.”

Genevieve is the Manager of Learning and Development and has been at GCI for nearly 15 years. In Genevieve’s spare time, you can find this Anchorage local camping and exploring Alaska’s wild beauty with her husband, 2 children, and 2 dogs!

“When I started at GCI over seven years ago, I didn’t realize how much the people and the purpose would mean to me. Over time, I’ve learned that it’s not about the numbers — it’s about helping customers. If I can make someone’s day a little easier or brighter, that’s what drives me.

I’ve been a GCI customer for years — long before I worked here. I’ve always been into gaming, streaming, and staying connected with friends and family, especially those overseas. Now I get to be part of the team that helps other Alaskans stay connected too. What started as just my connection to the world has become a workplace full of people I call friends — we bowl, barbecue, and celebrate together. It’s more than a job; it’s a community.

Now that I’m in a leadership role, my focus has shifted to helping my team succeed. I tell my reps that my goal is to make their lives as easy as possible. I’ve worked in a lot of different stores under different managers, and I’ve seen what motivates people. If I can remove barriers and set my team up for success, that’s what I’m here for.

Anchorage will always be home. My family’s roots run deep here — both my parents went to Dimond High, and I did too. Even at work, I run into people who went to school with my family. It’s that small town, community feel that makes Alaska special and keeps me here.

That’s what GCI means to me — it’s family. It’s the people who show up every day to keep Alaska connected and support one another while doing it.”

Meet Kegan, Assistant Manager and a lifelong Anchorage local with deep roots in the Jewel Lake community. When he’s not helping his team or assisting customers, you can find him bowling at Jewel Lake Bowl, singing karaoke, or cooking with his girlfriend. Kegan’s energy and Alaska pride shines through everything he does at GCI!

We are deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of support and donations for those impacted in Western Alaska. Alaskans truly rose to the occasion, your generosity has been overwhelming, and we’re profoundly moved by the compassion and unity shown across our state.

Thanks to your kindness, our shelters have been well-supported with physical donations. To better match the evolving needs of Alaskans displaced by the storm, we are no longer accepting physical donations. The most effective way to continue supporting recovery efforts is through monetary donations, which help agencies provide long-term assistance to families rebuilding their lives. If you would like to continue to support Western Alaska relief efforts, we encourage you to join us in donating monetarily to one of the organizations below.

Thank you for standing with Western Alaska. GCI is deeply grateful to be part of a community that shows up when it matters most.

University of Alaska Fairbanks “Overwatch” player Owen Swan Adams is leveling up his game and his future. He was recently awarded the renewable $5,000 GCI Esports Scholarship.

When reflecting on his time as captain, Owen said, “Being a leader means being the team's biggest cheerleader, anytime there's a big win, or a big loss, you play a pivotal role in how your team responds. There's something so pride-inducing about being able to see all the progress your teammates make via your coaching or their individual practice. Emotions can get really tense, being able to do really solid conflict resolution and enabling conversations to happen, enables people to all feel their voices are heard.”

Highlighting the team aspect of esports, Owen credits current captain Miko Lemecha for keeping him in the game adding, “He’s my rival and my best friend.”

When the head of Esports at UAF delivered the scholarship news through Discord, Adams says he was nearly moved to tears. "Growing up in Fairbanks, the idea of playing collegiate esports or joining a team at all had felt out of reach. Now, that dream is a reality." Adams credits GCI for making this possible, saying: “High-speed internet gives players a level of assemblage and understanding that they have all the backing they need. It's about the culture, it's about everything, but that there's this space for us to come compete, and all of these other needs are in order to compete at the very highest level. It's so unbelievably important for students to know that they're supported in every aspect, so that they can do what's important and play the game at the highest level they can.”

Thanks to GCI’s support, Adams can focus without the stress of finances. He said trust plays a big role, and he feels fortunate to have so many people who believe in him including GCI. He hopes to continue in esports as a professional player, coach or caster, driven by the same excitement that fuels traditional sports: one team striving to outplay another. With scholarship support, reliable GCI broadband, and access to the Alaska Esports facility, Adams is proving that esports is both an industry and a leadership incubator.

When disaster strikes, Alaskans do what we’ve always done — we help our neighbors. In the wake of Typhoon Halong, GCI employees across the state are stepping up to support Western Alaska communities hit hard by flooding and high winds.

Led by Lovina Arnold, a GCI Accountant with strong ties to Kipnuk, our teams are collecting urgently needed supplies to help families recover and rebuild. Even as some of our own employees were displaced or lost their homes, they’ve continued restoring service, delivering supplies, and checking on their neighbors. Their strength, compassion, and dedication embody what it means to be Alaskan. ❤️

GCI is also contributing $100,000 to the Alaska Community Foundation's Western Alaska Disaster Relief 2025 Fund and providing generators and chargers to assist with response efforts.

Together, we’ll help Western Alaska rebuild, stronger than ever. See how you can help your Alaska neighbors: bit.ly/46Rc8w2.
