Hold the phone! A new episode of the Alaska Powerline Podcast is live!

Southeast Alaska Power Agency (SEAPA) is a wholesale power provider based in Ketchikan. The communities it serves are remote, and they are connected by the state’s second largest transmission system. Maintaining a reliable and affordable system presents interesting challenges. For example, most maintenance is needed in areas only accessible by helicopter or boat.

CEO Robert Siedman talks about SEAPA’s system, its upcoming FERC relicensing, and the balance electric utilities must achieve between reliability and costs.

That's a wrap! The final day of the APA Federal Legislative Conference has come to a close here on the East Coast. We closed out our time in Washington, D.C. with high-level meetings with Rep. Nick Begich and Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The meetings covered many topics, from energy tax credits to project development to federal departments and agencies.

APA and the electric utility members on the trip leave the capital having made an impact while continuing our advocacy for Alaska's electric utilities.

Another terrific day of advocating for Alaska's electric utilities in Washington, D.C.!

The second day of APA's Federal Legislative Conference began by meeting with Christopher McLean, the acting administrator of the Rural Utilities Service, to discuss programs and funding from that agency. Next, we were off to the Department of Energy (some of us on scooters!) for two separate meetings with the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations and the Grid Deployment Office.

We ended the day with a great meeting with Sen. Dan Sullivan that touched on several issues important to APA's electric utility members.

Tomorrow is the final day and will have us very active on Capitol Hill telling the stories of Alaska's electric utilities.

The first day of the Alaska Power Association Federal Legislative Conference is in the books and a shining success! The APA contingent met with the legal counsel to the chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the executive director of the Congressional Western Caucus, the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and the DOE Office of Electricity.

We also had some fun taking new modes of transportation around the capital! Day two of the conference will be another busy day advocating for Alaska's electric utilities.

Just in time for the weekend! A new Alaska Powerline episode is out!

Inside Passage Electric Cooperative is not connected to an outside electric grid. Furthermore, nearly every community IPEC serves is accessible only by boat or plane, which presents unique challenges. CEO Brandon Shaw shares how the cooperative has been able to integrate hydropower into the local electric systems without losing the reliability that diesel power provides.
