“All of Us Are Humans”: Heroic Syrian Refugee Saves 80-Year-Old Woman from Drowning in England

A Syrian refugee has been hailed as a hero after jumping into a river to save an 80-year-old woman from drowning in the English town where his family found safety seven years ago.
Samer Jouha, a 51-year-old carpenter originally from Damascus, was walking with his family beside the River Avon in Evesham, Worcestershire, on Saturday, August 1, when Wendy Snell lost her balance and fell from an angling platform into the water.
Samer’s son Mo said his father heard a loud splash and ran towards the river. After seeing Wendy’s arm emerging from the water, he jumped in immediately and pulled her towards the riverbank.
“He did not hesitate, he just saw someone in need and he went straight into the river to help her,” Mo told the Evesham Observer.
“This is what our culture teaches us – if anyone needs help, you do your best to help them.
“I am proud to call him my father, he is a hero. It’s people like him who restore our faith in humanity.”
Samer said he did not know how deep the river was when he entered it. He managed to reach Wendy and pull her towards an angling platform, where another passerby helped him. A Maritime Volunteer Service rescue boat, which happened to be training nearby, then arrived and brought them safely out of the water.
Wendy escaped with only a few bumps, while Samer injured his toe. After making sure that she was receiving medical attention, he quietly walked home in his soaking-wet clothes.
Wendy and her son Paul visited Samer and his family the following day to thank him for saving her life. Paul described him as “the very definition of a hero who doesn’t wear a cape.”
Samer lost his phone and damaged his wallet and car keys during the rescue. Local residents established a fundraiser to replace his belongings, while the manager of the Evesham branch of Currys presented him with a new phone.
Originally from Damascus, Samer and his family fled Syria in 2011 and spent several difficult years as refugees in Lebanon. They reached Britain in 2019 through the UK government’s Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme and settled in Evesham.
Samer said the family initially struggled with moving to a new country without speaking the language but had since become part of the local community.
“They did good things for me and my family, and now it’s time to pay the community back,” he said.
His message after the rescue was characteristically simple:
“When you see somebody in need, go help them straight away, no hesitation. It doesn’t matter what skin colour or what religion they are, or where they’re from, or anything.
“All of us are humans, and whenever you see somebody in need of help, just do it. Do not look at their background.”
