Etta James was a teenager in the mid-1950s when she landed her first hit record, a co-write, no less. In the 1960s, she was a core part of the phenomenal blues music coming from the consequential Chess Records group. Despite serious hurdles, some self imposed, Etta endured, survived, and thrived, creating a wealth of timeless music over a 50 plus year career.
DeeperCuts presents music by, written by, and interpreted by Etta James, as well as artists she associated with, and those she influenced. We also give a nod to Billie Holiday, whose groundbreaking performances inspired Etta throughout her career.
Tune in tonight, Saturday 4-26-25 at 7:00 pm Alaska time (AST) heard on 90.3 fm KNBA local radio, also streaming at KNBA.org. Additional airing times of this show are found above this posting on DeeperCuts’ FB page.

Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and occasional record producer, Greg Brown is the featured artist on tonight’s edition of DeeperCuts. Working in and around the ‘Americana’ genre, Greg’s songs are keenly observant, deeply interpreted, and occasionally a bit silly, sometimes all at once. Greg’s baritone voice grabs the listener, and holds them in place ‘til the song ends. Midwestern practicality, and a wicked sense of humor, combined with complex poetic skill, have made Greg a unique figure in the music world for over 50 years.

02/01/2025

It’s the first day of February, and we kick off Black History Month featuring the work of incomparable musician Willie Dixon, today on DeeperCuts. Chicago blues are often associated with Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, but it was Willie Dixon that provided a solid bridge from blues to rock and roll as we know it today. Singer, bassist, and record producer, Willie’s legacy is much deeper than that, or the 500 plus songs that he wrote or co-wrote. Willie did 10 months in jail for refusing to serve in the military during WWII, in protest of America’s shameful treatment of Black folks. Additionally, Willie created The Blues Heaven Foundation, which worked to ensure fair protections and royalties for blues artists. Countless artists, including Led Zeppelin, were routinely borrowing music from blues musicians without permission, much less sharing royalties.
Willie Dixon put a stop to that,
Willie was known as the ‘Poet Laureate of the Blues’, and ‘The Father of Chicago Blues’.
Every song on today’s diverse playlist was written , played on, or produced by Willie Dixon. I am grateful his music lives on, and proud to present a sliver of his titanic body of work.
Tune in tonight, Saturday 2-1-25 at 7:00 pm AST, heard on 90.3 fm KNBA radio, or KNBA.org. Additional airings of DeeperCuts are found on the schedule at our FB home page.

The program called DeeperCuts first aired in June of 2018. A 7.2 earthquake in late November 2018 caused heavy damage to the studio and offices of KNBA, where I was an in-studio volunteer DJ. This event led to creation of my home studio space, dubbed ‘studio J’ a couple months later. Many thanks to Ayla Jackson for all the tech to make a studio space happen, and to Loren Dixon for encouraging me to become an independent producer.
So, happy six years to Studio J! Thank you listeners, who keep me fired up, cranking out shows week by week.
Tune in tonight for another eclectic hour of some great music not often heard, airing at 7:00 pm AST, Saturday 1-18-25, heard at KNBA.org, or local radio 90.3 fm KNBA. This is show 326
Additional airings of the show are heard at 9:00 pm AST, Monday 1-20-25, ktna.org, and at 3:00 pm AST, Tuesday 1-21-25 kstk.org
Enjoy the show 🤓, and thank you for listening 😎
