I see it constantly. People who agree on political or social changes that need to be made, but they can’t get on the same page about the right strategy or path to the reform they desire. I always say start with the WHAT conversation first, but if you really want to go somewhere you also need a strong shared HOW.

Early in my leadership journey I thought that if I disappointed someone, I must have messed up. While that might have been true at times, there are also many times when doing the right thing will inevitably disappoint someone. The sooner I learned that lesson, the more confidently I could make important decisions. It’s still not easy as I never want to disappoint people. But it is strangely comforting to know that it goes with the territory.
