Finding Bethany

Finding Bethany You don’t have to have a murdered sister to be a good homicide detective, but it helps.

Finding Bethany is a step-by-step, behind the scenes, tale of murder and justice in the Last Frontier’s biggest city of Anchorage, Alaska. Finding Bethany is the true crime life story of a young boy who failed to save his sister from a heinous death and how he begins his journey as a police officer to find the lost, the missing, and to bring those who would do evil upon others to justice. His care

er as a homicide detective takes him from the brink of exhaustion and obsession and into the dark and evil world of sociopathic killers, and those who would do anything to help them. Can the detective overcome his own fears, his own guilt, and his own loss, in order to help a family find their missing daughter?

The parole board announced that Allan Chase is not eligible for parole and he is not to apply for parole for at least 5 years, including a requirement for him to complete s*x offender treatment at Lemon Creek Correctional Facility.

The words "Thank you" are too small and too insufficient for me to properly express my gratitude to EVERYONE who wrote emails and letters to the parole board. THEY MADE A DIFFERENCE. YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE.

I saw the huge pile of letters in the parole board packets and it was clear from the questions of the board that they listened to your words.

I am humbled and so incredibly thankful.

sincerely,

Glen Klinkhart

Chase Parole Hearing Update

Today I was present at Spring Creek Correctional Facility for the Discretionary Parole hearing for Dawn's killer, Allan Chase. Mr. Chase was present. The hearing did not take very long. The most interesting part of the hearing was right after Mr. Chase was sworn in under oath. Chase began by committing perjury when he swore he never said, “Fine, if you let me out I'd probably do it again.” He further exasperated the situation by saying he has never thought or even felt that way.

When it was my turn to speak I informed the Parole Board that Mr. Chase did say indeed say those words as I was present when he said them. As I thought about it, my concern isn’t simply the fact that Mr. Chase had just committed perjury, but this was a window into his mind, and his unwillingness to accept his own words and actions. If someone cannot take responsibility for a half a dozen words said in anger 10 years ago, how could he ever begin to take responsibility for his actions?

I continued to speak by telling the Parole Board my family had gone to the last parole hearing with a gift. Our gift was one of hoping to support Mr. Chase’s release someday. It was a gift of forgiveness. This gift however was not unconditional. It came with proof Mr. Chase had done something with his time in prison. It required he do things to better himself. Unfortunately for Mr. Chase had done nothing of any substance to better himself during his incarceration. Today I told the Parole board that the Klinkhart family had once again prepared this same gift for him. Unfortunately, based upon his last 10 years and his words today, this gift will continue to remain unwrapped. Perhaps in 5, 10, or 20 years from now this gift will see the light of day. But not today.

Once I was done speaking the hearing was over and I was escorted out of the room.

I am awaiting the decision of the board.

Dawn’s Murderer Wants Out of Prison

Normally I don’t ask for much of my friends and of my community, however today I am asking for a minute or two of your time.

In 1981 Allan Chase Jr. s*xually assaulted and murdered my then 17-year-old sister, Dawn Klinkhart, as she slept in our Anchorage home. Chase beat her, r***d her, and then set her and our house on fire and left her to die.

Since his sentencing to 75 years in prison Mr. Chase has had only one parole hearing. It was at the 2007 hearing where an angry Allan Chase Jr. told members of the parole board, “If you let me out, I’d probably do it again.”

I have recently learned Allan Chase Jr. is once again asking the Alaskan Parole Board to be released from prison. I am asking you, my friends, my family, and my community, to please consider mailing or emailing any concerns you may have regarding the possibility of this man being released into our community. I will not tell you what to think, to feel, or what to write, but I do ask for you to consider letting your voices be heard.

You may write to the Parole Board care of:
The Department of Corrections
Attention: Probation Officer Marissa Lapinskas
3600 Bette Catto Drive
Seward, AK 99664

Or you can email your letter to:
[email protected]
Subject: Allan R. Chase Jr - Discretionary Parole Hearing

Your letters are needed by 8/11/2017 so they can be provided to all the members of the parole board.

Please feel free to share this with your friends, your family, and your community.

Thank you,
Glen Klinkhart

"Dear Finding Bethany,
Amazing. I couldn't put it down, even though I had to in order to sleep and go to work. From Dawn's story to Bethany's, you honored their memories. My favorite true crime writer was Ann Rule. I think you should write more, maybe true crime stories from Alaska. I would read all of them. Thank You for your service and dedication to finding Bethany and getting justice for her."

I had not one, but two, people tell me yesterday how much they enjoyed reading Finding Bethany... And they each followed it up with, "I didn't think it would be that good." I think that is a huge compliment for the book, but I'm not sure what it says about me.

While having my morning coffee and catching up on my emails, one in particular stood out. I thought I would share it this morning.

"Dear Glen,

I finished reading your book today. I didn't get to start reading until 10:30 pm last night, but had to stop at 3:45 a.m. realizing I needed to wake up and get going in a few short hours. Obviously, your writing is gripping, as is the subject. It had to be painful being a detective. I am glad you are out of it now, but glad you were in it, bringing your talents, persistence, patience, knowledge, and heart to the bottomless needs of our community. I love that you stand against the pervasive societal acceptance of women as prey, the notion of (our) meaningless lives. And after all the hardness and horrors you have experienced, I loved how you ended the book with Bethany's little essay on love, especially her last sentence, "Love can touch a person's life forever and leave an impression never to be forgotten." Love wins.

Thank you for all your work and dedication as a detective, and thank you for sharing some of what that meant. If you were worried about telling your truth, I hope that has passed. Truth is very liberating, and is a much-needed commodity in this world. Even hard truths are better than soft lies or silence.

All the best to you Glen"
