The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for... Southwestern Madison County in central Indiana... East central Hamilton County in central Indiana...

* Until 545 PM EDT.

* At 502 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 9 miles east of Noblesville, or 9 miles west of Anderson, moving northeast at 10 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

* Locations impacted include... Anderson, Noblesville, Lapel, Edgewood, Frankton, Woodlawn Heights, Country Club Heights, and River Forest. This includes Interstate 69 between mile markers 211 and 212.

* AFFECTED AREAS: HAMILTON, IN ... MADISON, IN

Instructions:

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. I’ve got some good news and some bad news. 🤷

First, the GOOD news: there is a cold front pushing its way toward our area, yay! That means a cool down is on the way! It will be a gradual cool down BUT it’s still a cool down.

The bad news: that cool down means a chance of popcorn type weather today and rainy days for the foreseeable future.

The cold front is already inspiring weather out in Illinois.

It appears we are in a bit of a lull period right now. Looking back to the west on radar there is just no indication of that second wave I’ve mentioned even producing. It appears the mid-day rain and cloud coverage did its job and prevented that more threatening wave from producing up in the northern half of Indiana. As I post this, the NWS is issuing tornado warnings down southwest of our area.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a

* Tornado Watch for portions of Southern into Central and North-Central Indiana

* Effective this Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning from 535 PM until 100 AM EDT.

* Primary threats include... A few tornadoes and a couple intense tornadoes likely Widespread damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 80 mph likely Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2.5 inches in diameter likely

SUMMARY...Severe thunderstorms are forecast to move east into the Watch this evening and continue into the early overnight. Supercells capable of tornadoes, some of which will probably be strong, large to very large hail, and severe gusts are expected with this activity.

The tornado watch area is approximately along and 70 statute miles north and south of a line from 25 miles northwest of Terre Haute IN to 30 miles south southeast of Muncie IN. For a complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline update (WOUS64 KWNS WOU4).

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- Total rainfall of 1-2 inches is expected with locally higher amounts in excess of 4 inches. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

I’ve got some good news to report on the expectation of our area receiving nasty threatening weather.

I looked at the overnight weather model run and it is beginning to acknowledge the possibility of that second more threatening band of storms to lose their strength due to the midday rain and lack of sunshine we are expecting today. I posted a shot of the current satellite, this cloud cover should certainly help us. (Image 2) It also appears to have noted the weather, both mid-day and evening should arrive quicker than originally anticipated.

I should also note that the Storm Prediction Center has expanded the “moderate” risk area further East and South, just barely clipping far Western Madison County. (Image 3)

It’s looking like the second wave has an average expected arrival time between 9-10pm, (image 1) departing by 11:30pm or so. The first round of rainy stuff should be here this afternoon between 2-3pm.

Now, let’s be clear about something. This IS NOT permission to just let the weather pass over and not pay attention. There are still several other elements at play in the atmosphere that can spin up a random surprise tornado or launch an attack of large hail. Use last night’s storms as an example. We had a basic, simple looking storm coming at us that kept trying to rotate. It was rotating in the upper atmosphere as it passed over our back yards. Continue to monitor the weather as it approaches, passes over us, and leaves us. I don’t consider the threat “gone” until there is AT LEAST one county between us and the weather.
